Marvel fans have been excited to see Nova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for a long time. Recent news from Deadline suggests that this might happen soon. The original writer, Sabir Pirzada, who worked on Moon Knight, will be replaced by Ed Bernero.

This marks a change in the project's direction. It was first announced two and a half years ago, but it wasn't clear if it would be a movie or a TV show. Now, it's officially confirmed to be a Disney+ series. The show will focus on Richard Rider, a member of the intergalactic Nova Corps.

This series, with Bernero managing the characters, will finally bring Nova into the MCU franchise and move the story forward in this series. Fans, along with the creators, wonder why Nova wasn't included in earlier MCU projects. Guardians of the Galaxy could have easily introduced Nova, but now, Nova is finally making progress.

Let's look at everything we know so far about this important addition to the MCU.

Who is Richard Rider, and why is he important to the MCU?

The first Nova was Richard Rider, who appeared in Super Adventures in 1976. He was chosen by Rhomann Dey, the last surviving member of the Nova Corps on Earth. After gaining this power, Rider joined this group of space police.

Nova is a popular Marvel character known for his incredible powers, like being very strong, flying, and not getting hurt easily. Although he hasn't shown up in the Marvel movies yet, his stories in comic books are connected to big Marvel events.

In stories like Secret Invasion and the new Captain America: Brave New World, Nova fights against the Skrulls, showing how he can link battles in space with those on Earth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, Director James Gunn didn't include Nova in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. He talked more about Peter Quill instead.

"I only wanted one human being."

Another executive at Marvel Studios is optimistic that Nova will hit the screens. Brad Winderbaum said on the Phase Zero podcast earlier this year:

"We are in really early development on Nova… I hope it gets to the screen."

Ed Bernero is the veteran showrunner behind Nova

Ed Bernero brought a lot of confidence and energy to Nova. He was supposed to be the main person in charge of Criminal Minds, so he's good at creating exciting stories with important characters.

He has worked on other shows like Third Watch and Crossing Lines, which shows he can tell stories that follow a process and involve different countries. This choice of Bernero is different from what Sabir Pirzada had in mind at first; Sabir helped write the early versions of the project.

Since Nova is now a Disney+ series, Bernero's experience in creating episodes could allow him to show on screen how the character becomes a hero.

Deadline reports that Bernero's involvement has been a key moment for this long-developing project. The show will explore Nova's challenges, his relationship with the Nova Corps, and how it ties into larger MCU events, such as the Skrull invasions.

How Nova could possibly change the future of the MCU

Nova will bring new adventures to the Marvel universe, connecting past and future movies. The show might focus on the Nova Corps, a group we didn't get to see much of after Xandar was destroyed in Avengers: Infinity War.

In the comic books, Nova is a helpful ally in battles against space threats, which could lead to him working with heroes like Captain Marvel or the Guardians of the Galaxy.

We don't know when Nova will come out, but it could make the cosmic stories in the Marvel universe more exciting. This is important because Marvel has been criticized for making too many movies. Since Nova is linked to the Skrulls, he might play a big role in the events after Secret Invasion.

Brad Winderbaum's remarks highlight the challenges of making Nova a real character while Marvel is adjusting its production approach. He admitted,

"The world is chaos. It’s hard to make anything."

However, his confidence in its potential shows how significant the project is.

Nova will be available only on Disney+, but there is no set release date yet.
