Since the global premiere of the second part of season 4 of Emily in Paris on Netflix, fan discussions have centered mainly on the titular Emily. They are curious whether Emily will move to greener pastures from her on-again-off-again relationship with Gabriel, which has been going on for the past three seasons.
However, by the end of season 4, all the conversation around this seemed to be put to a stop since now it seems they have broken up for good. This is not a surprise for dedicated fans of the series since the couple also broke up in the previous seasons only to get back together. However, this season is a bit different, and fans were indeed rooting for the couple’s break-up.
By the end of season 4, Emily is moving to Rome; however, that does not mean Paris will be erased from her life.

Marcello and Emily's romance started in turbulent times in Emily in Paris
Things went sour between Gabriel and Emily during a Christmas skiing trip accompanied by Camille, Emily’s friend and Gabriel’s ex-girlfriend, and her family. When Emily encounters a near-death experience at the top of the mountain, and Gabriel doesn’t save her because he is busy looking out for Camille, Emily becomes sure that this relationship has run its course.
Gabriel confirms this later when he tells Emily that they have a communication problem owing to her inability to converse in his native language, French. This becomes a turning point for Emily and the audience alike, as she is instead saved by the gorgeous and handsome Italian man, Marcello Muratori, heir to an Italian Fashion company.
Initially rejected as a one-off thing by Emily, they meet again during the trip and grow fond of each other. Their romance eventually blooms in Paris, so much so that Marcello invites her to Rome for a holiday trip.
However, Marcello ghosts Emily after some time. Regardless, Emily takes a flight for Rome as she takes charge of her life and follows her heart by taking the plunge.
Ever since his arrival in the French Alps and helping Emily ski down the slope while she was going through abandonment issues, Marcello has been a charming and engrossing presence in Emily’s unstable and chaotic life. Marcello’s kind and empathetic to her as she nurses her heartbreak, making her optimistic about love and relationships.
Their easy compatibility was challenged, however, when Marcello ghosted her and eventually came back at his mother’s insistence. Marcello admitted his mistake by realizing that Emily went to Rome to give their relationship a chance rather than handle the Muratori account.
Marcello has been an influential character in Emily in Paris
Marcello seems to have positively influenced Emily’s life in the short span they have known each other. While in Rome, Marcello advised Emily not to click pictures throughout the trip and instead focus on living in the moment.
Emily, who had previous bitter experiences of oversharing on social media and thus negatively influencing her relationships, decides to change for the better and leaves her phone on the flat before going to Rome with Marcello.
This positive character development for Emily is also seen in her prioritizing her personal life instead of her professional life by impulsively organizing a trip to Rome.
It will be seen in season 5 whether this change in Emily’s outlook will be permanent or whether Gabriel will win her over as he plans to go to Rome in the final moments of season 4.
Fans are totally shipping Marcello and Emily's storyline in Emily in Paris
Nevertheless, fans seem to be enamored by Marcello as they are already shipping for their relationship. The official subreddit of Emily in Paris is filled with posts with people praising Marcello as Emily's ideal partner.
As iamrubyflows commented on the thread, " Team Marcello for life. I want Gabriel to go back to the mountain and not come back.” Other related comments mainly focused on how Marcello is a green flag, and they are taking their relationship slowly.
However, fans are also skeptical about how Marcello can be turned into a potential competitor for Gabriel and will eventually be replaced by the latter in Emily’s life, as was the case with Aiden and Alfie.
It remains to be seen what course Emily’s life takes in the already renewed season 5 of the beloved show. The final moments emphasize that Marcello and Emily are still going strong, and Emily will be back in Rome for professional reasons in the new season.
