Shark Tank investor Barbara Corcoran has a piece of expert advice for those struggling to ask for a raise from their bosses. Considering asking for a raise is a struggling task, Corcoran told the Business Insider reporter that women find it harder to seek a hike from their bosses.
Barbara Corcoran humorously quipped at the reporter and said that he looked like he was underpaid. When the reporter asked why, Corcoran explained that he would have worn a better shirt for the interview if he was "making enough money."
However, moving on to the real point, Barbara Corcoran mentioned that, compared to men, women do not ask for a hike unless they believe they deserve it. Adding further to the conversation, the Shark Tank investor Barbara Corcoran told the reporter about the "smartest" way to ask for a salary hike. Barbara Corcoran remarked:
"And so, what the smartest thing to do is, first of all, make an appointment to ask for a raise, even if your expectation isn't that you're gonna get it. At least ask for it, because that sets you up for the next meeting where you'll likely get it."
Shark Tank investor Barbara Corcoran explains the difference between men and women asking for a raise
While suggesting ways to successfully get a raise, the Shark Tank mentor Barbara Corcoran told Business Insider during an interview that there is a difference in the way a man asks for a raise compared to a woman.
Suggesting that one should be prepared fully before going on for a talk about salary hikes, Barbara advised people to make a list of responsibilities that they are ready to take in and how they have improved since the day they joined. However, The Corcoran Group founder, Barbara, mentioned that while asking for a raise, women do not give a definite number, while men do.
Citing a clear difference between the way men and women approach the process of salary hikes, she rendered some suggestions to women and said:
"Men will walk in and say, "I'd like to get a raise. I'd like it to be around 10, 15 percent. No qualms. So, if you're a timid woman, I think the smart thing to do is ask, 'What would a man do?' And walk in thinking like a man."
Shark Tank's mentor also suggested that if one does not get a raise, one should always ask about what could get them a raise. So that when they approach the boss next time for a raise, they have worked on it.
