Much to the fans’ delight, Reacher has returned to Amazon Prime Video with season 3 and the first three episodes premiered on February 20, 2025. The third season also features Reacher as the titular character, who goes undercover in an attempt to get hold of a crime syndicate.

Based on Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series of books, the previous seasons of Reacher have remained more or less faithful to the source material barring a few tweaks here and there. While this remains the same for the third season, a whole character has been written off in the show, who was present in the book.

Let us now discuss the differences that Reacher Season 3 has from its source material.

Reacher Season 3 does not feature Elizabeth Beck

One key deviation from Persuader, the book that Reacher Season 3 is based on, is the absence of the character of Elizabeth Beck, the wife of Zachary Beck. Anthony Hall, the actor who plays Zachary in Reacher Season 3, addressed this change in the show.

In an interview with The Direct, Hall mentioned,

“And I have to say, it (Season 3) was very true [to the source material], with the exception, I think, of the omission of the character of the wife. And obviously, you know, in an eight-episode season, you’re not going to have everything in there, but I think there are large portions of the novel that are excerpts that contain Season 3 here.”

Zachary’s character here is shown to be in the import-export business. However, that is a lie, which he uses to hide his actual criminal activities. Talking about his character, Hall said,

“We know something’s awry here because something’s not lining up as it were. So what’s really cool about the goal is that this is something I spoke to [showrunner] Nick [Santora] about. There’s a lot of room for me to play…”

His character has been kept more or less true to the source material and so, viewers can expect to see the kind of Great Gatsby-esque life he was leading.

There are some changes in Pauline’s character in Reacher Season 3

Another deviation that Reacher Season 3 makes from its source material Persuader, is in the portrayal of the character of Pauline, the main antagonist of the season. The reason behind this, as explained by Lee Child himself is the absence of Elizabeth Beck.

In the book, Pauline, besides being a gigantic bodyguard, is also seen to be torturing Elizabeth Beck, which adds an extra layer of repulsion to his character. However, as Lee Child mentioned,

That was a nasty strand, and it produced even more revulsion against Paulie in the book. But, we felt we don't need more revulsion. We should focus on the actual criminal conspiracy. We know that Paulie is a servant of that. And the nature of thrillers on the screen is that as soon as you see that guy, right away, you know Reacher is going to have to fight him. And we felt that was enough, without the gratuitous mistreatment of Mrs. Beck."

This perfectly sums up why the minor tweaks in Pauline’s character were necessary. The absence of one important character is bound to impact the storyline and character development and that is what has happened in Reacher Season 3.

Reacher can be streamed on Amazon Prime.
