BAFTA 2025, the prestigious awards show hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, took place on February 16, 2025.
People already had some mixed reviews about the nominations list when Denzel Washington was snubbed out of a nomination for his performance in Gladiator II. He has never been nominated for a BAFTA before, despite his career. Likewise, Luca Guadagnino’s much-talked-about Challengers was also left out of the nominations list.
Talking about nominations, Edward Berger’s Vatican thriller movie Conclave had the most nominations (twelve), followed closely by Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist (eleven). Both the movies were in a tie and took home four awards each.
There were quite many surprises on the BAFTA 2025 night. Here is a list of who won what.
The Brutalist and Conclave for the win at BAFTA 2025
In BAFTA 2025, Conclave and The Brutalist emerged as the true winners, taking home the most number of awards.
Conclave won four awards for Outstanding British Film, Best Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, and Best Film. Berger accepted the awards and noted:
“We live in a time of a crisis of democracy. Institutions used to bringing us together are used to pull us apart. Sometimes it’s hard to keep the faith, and that’s why we make movies.”
The Brutalist also proved its worth and is tied to Berger's thriller. The Brutalist took home four BAFTAs, with Best Director for Brady Corbet, Best Actor for Adrien Brody, and Best Cinematography and Score.
Mikey Madison beats Demi Moore for Best Actress at the BAFTA 2025
The night's biggest surprise came when actress Mikey Madison (Anora) beat Demi Moore's The Substance performance and grabbed the BAFTA 2025 for Best Actress. She plays an exotic dancer in the movie and gave a nod to the s*x worker community in her acceptance speech:
“I see you, you deserve respect and human decency. I will always be a friend and an ally and I implore others to do the same.”
In addition, Sean Baker and Samantha Quan also took home the award for Best Casting for Anora.
Other big wins at BAFTA 2025
Beating amazing titles such as All We Imagine As Light and Kneecap, Jacques Audiard's Emilia Pérez won the Best Film not in the English language. Earlier, actress Karla Sofía Gascón. made quite the waves on social media with her Islamophobic and racist tweets.
Still, Audiard and co-star Zoe Saldaña, who picked the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress, mentioned Gascon in their acceptance speeches.
While Kneecap was snubbed in this category, it managed to convert one out of six nominations for Outstanding Debut by a British Director for Rich Peppiatt.
Kieran Culkin bagged the award for Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain, which was accepted by Jesse Eisenberg, who also won the BAFTA 2025 for Original Screenplay for the film.
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story won the award for Best Documentary, while Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl took the award for Best Animated and Children's & Family Film.
The Substance took home the Best Hair and Makeup award, and Paul Tazewell's musical Wicked bagged the Best Costume and Production Design award.
Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two also bagged two awards for Special Visual Effects and Sound.
