Love Is Blind stands true to its name, as the show is all about finding out whether love is actually blind or not. In a dating world, where physicality becomes one of the most spoken about insecurities, Chris Coelen, the creator and executive producer of the show decided to come up with a unique social experiment, where one cannot judge a book by its cover.

In 2020, the show aired for the first time, marking the beginning of a social experiment where the singles connected via soundproof pods. They go on a journey of weeks, where they cross multiple hurdles including emotional and physical compatibility, family's approval, trusting the process, and lastly walking down the altar.

The creator of the show has meticulously designed each milestone to ensure that fans receive their dose of entertainment while still focusing on the show's main goal: finding love. The producers adhere to certain rules and protocols to maintain consistency, entertainment value, and authenticity. Let's take a closer look at a few of these rules that contribute to the creation of such an engaging show.

Five protocols that the creators of "Love Is Blind" adhere to without question:

1. Setting the pods date cautiously

For the audiences, the final cuts are served, and therefore they witness the pod dates in bits and pieces. However, Chris Coelen described the whole process of setting up pod dates, and how they progress once someone has found their connection. In 2020, during an interview with Bustle, Chris explained:

"In the beginning, they spend time with everyone, speed-dating style. As time goes on, they get to pick the people they want to spend more time with. They make the decisions themselves."

2. The pod experiment typically lasts for about 10 days

As the singles enter the pods, they have got ample amount of time to find the 'One', and walk into the real world with their partner. As revealed by Chris Coelen in an article published on Netflix Tudum in 2024, the pod journey usually lasts for 10 days. In the article, Chris mentions:

"After the fact, people have said they know — not just the person they’re engaged to, but multiple people — better than they’ve ever known anyone else. Better than they know their parents. Their siblings. It’s insane. They really do fall in love.”

As reported by US Weekly on October 16, season 1 of Love Is Blind lasted for a total of 38 days.

3. There are certain engagement protocols

Chris Coelen revealed during an interview with Variety in February 2022, that the show's team provide the pod squad with the ring if they decide to get engaged.

The couple can decide to get engaged during those 10 days of their pod meeting. However, audiences have also witnessed that some couples decide to rekindle their romance after their pod journey.

Chris also mentioned about the choice of ring and said:

"If they choose to do that, we actually give choices. There are, like, 10 or 12 different styles and colors. It’s up to them, they don’t have to. There’s no pressure to do that.”

4. Who arranges the finances for the wedding?

Love Is Blind couples walk down the altar in their beautiful wedding dress in an alluring location, and if the audience is thinking about who pays the bill, the answer is Netflix.

Netflix covers the basic expenses of the wedding. The show also has the provision to allow the couples to add on to the arrangement, with the help of a wedding planner.

5. The couples are allowed to use only golden cups throughout the show

Love Is Blind couples are shown holding golden glasses throughout the show, and they must do so. The creators revealed that it is a trademark of the show, and signifies the relatability when audiences see the glasses appearing as many times as the cast. Chris Coelen told the Variety during an interview that:

"It’s something I like. When you turn on the show, you know it’s our show. It’s a very authentic, really true following of these people’s journeys, but I like the fact that we have this sort of connective tissue with that in a really light way, it’s fun.”

Love Is Blind is currently running in their seventh season, and awaits the finale which is scheduled to be aired on October 23, 2024, only on Netflix.
