As Anthony Bird, the new sous chef for Below Deck Down Under, expresses his reservations about collaborating with head chef Tzarina Mace-Ralph, tension is building aboard the motor yacht Katina's galley. Anthony questioned Tzarina about her working methods in the second episode of Season 3 of the show, saying:

"I'm just finding it a little bit chaotic. I work normally with a little bit more organiz[ation] and I just find it a bit overwhelming, that's all — when there's like, s—t everywhere."

The conversation marked a turning point in what initially seemed like a promising partnership aboard the luxury vessel sailing through the Seychelles. While Captain Jason Chambers of Below Deck Down Under had hoped adding Anthony would provide much-needed support in the galley, the relationship between the two chefs has quickly become complicated, with differing approaches to kitchen management creating friction.

What happened between Anthony and Tzarina on Below Deck Down Under?

What started as teamwork tackling weevils and maggots in the season premiere quickly devolved into conflict by the second day of the charter. Despite Anthony's push for more involvement, suggesting "we can definitely implement plans," the situation only grew more tense. Tzarina's perspective was clear in her confessional:

"I feel like Anthony sees me as like the new stepmom that he doesn't really want, but has to put up with."

The clash of working styles became evident when Anthony pushed for more organization, telling Tzarina she needed to "utilize me a bit more." He emphasized that working as a team could make things easier, particularly during breakfast service.

The tension escalated when Tzarina attempted to involve Anthony in a beach lunch for the guests in this episode of Below Deck Down Under. What was meant to be an opportunity became another source of conflict.

Anthony's comment, "Because that is your position, isn't it?" in response to Tzarina's explanation of preparing for guests during the discussion of the preparation, brought attention to the developing power struggle.

Tzarina tried to clarify her intentions:

"I'm not making you do my job at all. I asked if you would like to go to the beach. I'm not going to not cook or anything like that. I was going to completely prepare you, send you on your way, then I wanted you to like have some fun on the beach as well."

Growing tensions on deck explored

Anthony's perspective on their working relationship became clear in his confessional:

"I do think me and Tzarina have different approaches to being a yacht chef. Hers may be a bit more chaotic, mine may be a bit more structured and rigid, but my meticulous nature just comes from being passionate about food."

His frustration with the situation was evident when he remarked,

"I'm not trying to attack Tzarina here, but suddenly I'm going from being a dishwasher to doing beach canapes. This is a bit weird."

Although the visitors enjoyed the grilled lamb and salmon during the excellent beach lunch service, the underlying conflicts are yet to be addressed. The conflict between Anthony's need for organization and Tzarina's more adaptable style might lead to additional issues in the kitchen as the season goes on.

With the relationship between the chefs on Below Deck Down Under deteriorating early in the season, questions arise about their ability to work together effectively through future charters. The situation has already drawn attention from viewers, many of whom have expressed concern about the dynamic between the sous chef and his superior.

As Below Deck Down Under's third season unfolds, this galley drama promises to be a significant storyline, potentially affecting both the crew dynamics and guest experience aboard motor yacht Katina.
