Lioness Season 2 knows how to keep the audience engaged with its thrilling storyline. The show chronicles the journey of Joe, played by Zoe Saldaña, a CIA officer and the leader of the Lioness program, which recruits female operatives as undercover agents in terror-affected regions.
The show’s second season introduced a new intriguing character, Pablo Carrillo, played by Demián Castro. Pablo is a rich immigration lawyer who served as a US Army soldier.
What makes the character more interesting is that he is Alvaro Carrillo’s brother, the cartel’s leader. In Lioness season 2, CIA official Kaitlyn Meade and Deputy Director Byron Westfield want Pablo to side with them because of his connections with the cartel.

Pablo Carrillo is introduced in Lioness Season 2 Episode 2. The CIA finds that he is living a suspiciously wealthy life, owning a $3.5 million home despite earning only $110,000 a year. His ties to his brother, Alvaro, who runs the Los Tigres cartel, further intrigues the CIA’s interest in his life.
The CIA sees Pablo as a way to get to Alvaro and, more importantly, the Chinese agent working behind the scenes. They believe they can convince Pablo to work with them through his daughter, Josephina Carrillo, a US Army pilot.
She is recruited into the Lioness program to infiltrate the cartel and bring her family down from the inside. When Josephina and the team visit her family home in Lioness Season 2 Episode 6, they discover that Pablo has become deeply involved with the cartel and no longer resembles the loving father Josephina remembers.
After Josephina tells him the CIA knows about his cartel connections, he lashes out and even slaps her. Josephina’s partner in the mission, Cruz, then intervenes and gives Pablo two options: he can either help the CIA by exposing his brother and the Chinese agent or go to jail. Fearing for his life, Pablo agrees to cooperate.
Meanwhile, his house is surrounded by cartel security teams, who rush to the scene to protect him. However, QRF members are able to reach on time and save the CIA agents inside.
CIA officials Kaitlyn and Westfield want Pablo to work for them since his position as an insider gives him access to key information about the workings of the cartel. Flipping him against his brother would help damage the cartel’s operations by exposing their networks and dealings.

While Kaitlyn and Westfield see the potential in using Pablo, the move comes with some risks. Los Tigres cartel is a dangerous organization where betrayal is not tolerated. By agreeing to help the CIA, Pablo is not only risking his own life but also his family’s safety.
At the same time, if the cartel finds out about his involvement with the CIA, it could blow the entire mission. The exposure could escalate the US government’s tension with China. With Pablo onboard, the stakes will get higher, and the mission is set to become more dangerous.

Teaming up with him also shows Kaitlyn and Westfield’s willingness to work in the morally gray area if it leads to the mission’s success. The move will undoubtedly have long-term consequences, as Pablo could also change sides in the future.
