Light & Magic debuted on Disney+ for the first time in 2022. Light & Magic is a documentary that chronicles the genesis and long journey of the famous visual effects company Industrial Light and Magic (ILM).

For over the better part of five decades, ILM has been revolutionizing the field of film visual effects and special effects, as illustrated by the first season of Light & Magic.

As a testament to the resounding success of the debut season, Light & Magic has now officially been renewed for a sophomore season that is expected to hit Disney+ on April 18. As revealed by Joe Johnston, who replaces Lawrence Kasdan as the director of the second season, the next installment will continue the story right from where the first season ended, and will focus on ILM's work on Jurassic Park and several other landmark movies.

Industrial Light & Magic was first brought into existence by director and visual effects visionary George Lucas who got the company started to figure out the special effects for his Star Wars films. Eventually the company grew to sizable proportions and to date has contributed to more than three hundred movies in total.

Here's everything that we know.

What's the latest buzz about Light & Magic Season 2?

As per a report by Collider, season 2 of Light & Magic will hit Disney+ on April 18. Director Lawrence Kasdan is being replaced by Joe Johnston and it has been revealed by them that the second season will begin with its focus on the behind-the-scenes visual effects artistry on Jurassic Park, followed by ILM's work on other blockbuster movies. The narrative of the second season will jump back and forth in time and can't be expected to follow a linear pattern.

ILM has a long and proud list of movies that it has worked on in the visual effects department, including the Star Wars prequel trilogy, War of the Worlds, the Avatar movies, Gladiator 2, the recent Apple TV+ show Severance and others.

Joe Johnston speaks about Industrial Light and Magic

Season 2 director Joe Johnston has been working as a visual effects artist at ILM for quite a while now. While speaking in an interview with StarWars.com, Johnston opened about the genesis and subsequent successful journey of the company. He commented:

"It is something that could never happen again. All these different elements came together -- some of which had to be created on the spot! They didn't exist, like the motion control. And there were these people, many of whom hadn't worked in film before, but they had a specific skill and a talent to do one thing. It was just something that came together at that moment in time that could never be repeated again. And you know, we were all lucky to have been a part of it."
