“Let’s talk”: William Shatner may return to Star Trek as Captain Kirk but it might be too late

Even after almost 60 years, Captain Kirk of the Star Trek universe remains one of the more influential characters on screen. Though he died in the story, William Shatner teased that he may adorn the Starfleet uniform once more. Shatner first portrayed the role of Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek: The Original Series in 1966. His charming and empathic personality made him an instant hit.

As per The Direct, Shatner shared,

"I have been asked to come back as Kirk so many times. If Kirk is going to come back, it has to mean something. It has to be the show. But I was so impressed by this writer, so I said let's talk after I'm done in Vancouver. So I'm awaiting a pitch to make it the show, it should come on Monday or Tuesday."

Shatner made the revelation during a panel discussion at the Fan Expo Vancouver, called 'Execute! A Panel with William Shatner'. The legendary actor shared that he was contacted by one of the writers from Paramount+, who is currently developing a Star Trek series.


Captain Kirk in Star Trek

James T. Kirk was first seen on screen in Star Trek: The Original Series episode ‘The Man Trap’ as the captain of the USS Enterprise. Through the three seasons of The Original Series, he gained immense popularity. The show was cancelled in 1969 due to low ratings. However, the show’s syndication ensured that it reached a global audience. Captain Kirk became an overnight sensation.

As the iconic franchise diversified, Captain Kirk’s character found a key place in it. William Shatner has taken on the iconic character in the three seasons of The Original Series (1966-1969), Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973-1974) and the movies - Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989), Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) and Star Trek: Generations (1994).


What happened to Captain Kirk in Star Trek?

In Star Trek: Generations, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (played by Patrick Stewart) had found Kirk inside the Nexus, an extra-dimensional realm. Captain Kirk along with Captain Picard on Veridian III fight the El-Aurian scientist, Dr. Tolian Soran (played by Malcolm McDowell).

Kirk dies during the intense battle with the final words ‘Oh my’. Captain Kirk’s death drew a lot of criticism as fans felt he deserved a hero’s farewell.

During the final season of Star Trek: Picard, it is seen that Captain Kirk’s remains were at Daystrom Station, a Starfleet Federation location that is home to many of the galaxy’s artifacts and unknown secrets.

The character of Captain Kirk has been since played by Paul Wesley in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Chris Pine in Star Trek Beyond.


Can William Shatner return as Captain Kirk?

William Shatner, who is now 93 years old, may reprise the role of Captain Kirk but alas it may be restricted. There have been speculations on his possible return using de-aging technology, but it remains to be seen.

As the 60-year-mark of Star Trek approaches, Shatner could be looking at it as a final hurrah, and for the trekkies, there could be no greater joy than to see their hero back on the bridge.
