The local research head rejects Marie and Haukar's claim because he is afraid of reporting potentially false information. He further asks Marie and Haukar to come up with substantial proof.
Marie recalls an incident of a tourist family dying near the island because of the rising water temperature. Meanwhile, Sara and the family arrive at the hotel on the island and got upgraded to the same room as that of the tourist family.
Marie and Haukar continue their research on the cause of the huge crack while Álvaro, the head of research, received the warning of a level 5 earthquake. The gas eruption compels Álvaro to reach out to the government and start an evacuation plan. But the minister refuses to believe his words, and this further resulted in a 2nd eruption, not of gases but of ashes.
Marie and her brother Erik survived the 2004 tsunami at the cost of their parents. The research head tells them to get away from the island. While Jennifer, Sara's mother, has a brother in foreign affairs who leaks classified information in hope that she manages to escape.
Álvaro manages to let the government halt air travel as the next eruption is about to take place. The volcano erupts violently. As the island residents try to escape, the series also shows some personal tensions between the family, like the marital discord between Fredrik and Jennifer. The show further unfolds, depicting Marie's moral dilemmas and limitations of her duties amidst the most devastating catastrophe, La Palma.
Who all survived the La Palma catastrophe in the series?
In La Palma, the family survives the volcano eruption, including Jennifer, her husband Fredrik, and their children Sara and Tobias.
However, there comes a point when they all get separated from each other. Sara gets distracted when she notices Charlie in the airport. She decides to check on Charlie and gets separated from her family. Sara boards the plane and waits for her father Fredrik, but then, clueless about him, she offers the seat to Charlie. The plane met with a crash because of the erupting cloud of the volcano.
When Erik and Maire escape the police, they meet Fredrik, who has lost the will to survive. The trio heads towards the boat, but on the way, during a tussle between a criminal and Erik, the latter lost his life. Marie and Fredrik eventually reach the safe zone via boat. There he meets Jennifer and Tobias, who were already there as they got off the plane last minute to find Sara.
At the end of the series, Sara wakes up in the plane bleeding from her head while Charlie is knocked out beside her. One air hostess also survived the crash; the three of them reached the safe zone, and Sara is reunited with her family.
At the end of the show La Palma we listen to a voiceover of Erik and Marie, where Marie is diving into the sea with some turtles around her. The voice says that the turtles are even older than the dinosaurs, and they are the ones who know how to survive disasters. They know when it's no longer safe. Therefore, the show is also a pitch for climate change that urges the viewers to listen to nature.
