When Andre (played by Kevin Hart) casually backtracks from his words praising Phil Dunphy (played by Ty Burrell) after he spots Claire (played by Julie Bowen), we know Phil has met his match. Modern Family has had many iconic actors play cameos through their 11-Seasons run. But Kevin Hart as Andre gave the audience some of the funniest moments because of his brilliant comic timing.

Though Andre appeared only for two episodes in Season 3 of the hit comedy series, his short-lived, amusing friendship with Phil Dunphy was one of the highlights. While we do get to see Andre briefly interact with Claire and the Dunphy children, it would have been an absolute treat to watch him meet the whole Pritchett family.

Who is Andre in Modern Family?

Andre is an orthopedic surgeon and Phil Dunphy’s neighbor. He is afraid of his wife, which he would often reiterate. Phil and Andre have lived next to each other for eight years. They both share similar traits and go on to develop a wonderful friendship.

If Andre had continued on the show, we would have witnessed more of the hilarious dynamics between the two actors.

Andre and Phil become friends

In Season 3, Episode 7 titled ‘Treehouse’, Phil is building a tree house in his backyard for Luke (played by Nolan Gould) with blessings from Claire. Kind of. Luke isn’t completely on board with the idea, but Phil tries to convince him that a treehouse will enrich his childhood memories. It would appear as if Phil were doing it for himself and is missing friendship in his own life.

Phil isn’t the best with the way he handles the equipment, which concerns Luke. Luke leaves midway, leaving Phil to complete the treehouse on his own. Andre, Phil’s neighbor, sees him struggle up the tree. Phil shares that his son doesn’t care for the treehouse, and in turn, Andre says that he is cleaning up after their dog, which he got for his daughter.

They both realize that they share things in common. When Andre says that he has been living in that house for eight years, Phil is baffled. They both decide to become friends.

Andre matches Phil’s goofiness

In Season 3, Episode 21 titled ‘Plane, Trains and Cars’, Phil is planning to lease a car and Andre is helping him. Though he had decided to get a Cadillac, Phil dreams of driving something fancier, like the Porsche Convertible, which was also on display. Phil does not think Claire would approve of his choice. Andre pushes him to get the car and not be concerned with the consequences.

When they get back home, Phil is tense. Luke, Haley (played by Sarah Hyland), and Alex (played by Ariel Winter) are checking the car. Haley shares that she doesn’t want to see her dad driving in the car as he is old. But Andre stands by his friend, saying that Phil looks hot in the car and goes on to praise him until he spots Claire. His conviction suddenly disappears.

Claire surprisingly takes it well and does not react the way Phil expected, which makes both him and Andre antsy. When Phil asks if Andre wants to come in, he says that he must go home, not wanting to be part of the fight that will ensue between Phil and Claire. When Phil further offers to drive him, Andre runs away.

Later when Phil asks Andre to buy the car from him. Andre is excited, but then suddenly he says he can’t because the car has been on the floor. He calls it a ‘Katrina car’. Phil asks if the real reason is that his wife won't allow it. Andre shares that he is too afraid to even ask, leaving Phil to deal with the car on his own.

Modern Family was a hit American sitcom created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan for ABC, which ran for 11 seasons from 2009 to 2020. Kevin Hart portrayed the role of Andre on the hit series.
