The final curtain is coming down on Joe Goldberg—and this time, there's no alias, no flight plan, and no new town to disappear into. Netflix has announced that You will conclude with its fifth and last season, bringing to a close the dark story of love, deception, and killing.

But don't anticipate another round of obsession and do-overs. Season 5 is full-steam ahead into reckoning mode, with Joe back in New York City—where it started—for a finale that will deliver consequences, not rebirth.

A New York homecoming with a dark twist in You

Premiering globally on April 24, 2025, the last season returns Joe to New York, but he's a different bookstore clerk from Season 1. Living in opulence with Kate, who is aware of his gory past, Joe has tried to repair his public image. But as he attempts to keep up appearances, the ghosts of his past start surfacing. No more secretiveness behind books or suave monologues.

This season is all about exposure. Forget delusions of romance—Season 5 goes into high gear as a psychological thriller of public ruin and personal agony. Secrets buried (and corpses, for that matter) are fighting their way back to the surface, and the question hanging over it all is this: Can a man like Joe ever really leave behind the harm he's caused?

Closure, not redemption

Netflix has made it official: no sixth season, no spin-off, no redemption arc in the wings. Season 5 of You is meant to conclude Joe's story, not reinterpret it. And from the creative team, that conclusion won't be a tidy bow but a long-overdue reckoning with all he's evaded: justice, guilt, and the individuals he's harmed.

While Kate did contribute to redefining Joe's image, the cracks are beginning to appear. Season 5 of You will examine how long he can keep up appearances before they all come crashing down—and whether he'll be brought down by those he's hurt or by the monster he's always sought to deny.

Who's back and who might return in You

Penn Badgley returns as Joe Goldberg, and Charlotte Ritchie as Kate, now his wife and image control partner. Their relationship will come to the forefront as Joe's dual existence hangs in the balance before her and the public eye. Word is swirling about the potential returns of Tati Gabrielle's Marienne and Jenna Ortega's Ellie Alves, both of whom have unresolved issues with Joe.

Although Netflix has not officially announced that they will appear, the possibility of these two returning in the last season heightens the tensions in an already simmering story.

A tighter, more focused finale for You

In the background, You also is evolving. Veteran showrunner Sera Gamble departed last season, giving the reign to Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo, seasoned executive producers, who hope to provide a smart, no-junk series conclusion that ultimately puts Joe on notice.

Though the number of episodes is still unconfirmed, speculation is that there will be a shorter season, presumably 6 to 8 episodes, consistent with other Netflix endings. The emphasis is on storytelling that is lean, dense, and emotionally powerful.

What's coming for Joe in You?

This last chapter isn't about a fresh obsession—it's about the fallout from past ones. Look for a story full of suspense as Joe attempts (and fails) to outrun the demons of his own past. The facade of control is beginning to crumble, and for the first time, Joe won't be in control of the narrative.

The suspense will center on whether Joe can maintain the act or whether the truth will finally kill him. As the season hurtles toward its finish, anticipate blowout twists, returning foes, and the breakdown of the overarching deception that Joe is merely an innocent man searching for love.

No spin-offs, no next time

As of April 2025, there is no spin-off or continuation planned. The creators and Netflix are explicit: You conclude with Season 5. It is not a set-up for future content—it's a farewell intended to say everything and touch everyone.
