A six-season-long series, Virgin River is a romantic drama on Netflix. While the series has been renewed for a seventh season, Patrick Sean Smith, the showrunner, has decided to release a prequel.
Inspired by Robyn Carr's book series of the same name, the series focuses on Melinda Monroe/Mel. Mel takes a job as a midwife and a nurse practitioner in a secluded town in Northern California called Virgin River. Mel moves there in search of a fresh start but soon realizes living in a small town is far from simple.
While the sixth season focuses on Mel's wedding to Jack, the series will also share a glimpse of Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr as Mel's parents in flashback scenes.
Audiences will now see Rothe and Kerr as Mel's parents in a prequel of Virgin River. Jessica Rothe, known for her roles in Happy Death Day and La La Land, will play the role of Mel's mother, Sarah. Callum Kerr, known for his work in One Piece, will play the role of Mel's biological father, Everett.
Are Jessica Smith and Callum Kerr in the Virgin River prequel?
Callum Kerr and Jessica Rothe play the roles of Everett Reed and Sarah Jensen in season six. The characters will also reprise their roles in an upcoming prequel series that will expand the Virgin River universe. When talking about casting Kerr and Rothe in the series, Patrick Sean Smith stated,
"It was a search. It was always the plan that this could potentially be a back-door pilot, introducing this new timeline, so we cast with that in mind. We did chemistry reads with them and a couple of other actors who were really incredible. But Jess and Callum had such a spark together, such a fire together that it felt like we had hit gold in casting them."
What can audiences expect from the prequel?
According to Patrick Sean Smith, the prequel series will revolve around the origin of Virgin River as a town and the relationship between Sarah and Everett. Smith also revealed that the series is currently under development and will be set in the 1970s.
While there is not much information on the plot, the original series has given hints on what we can expect. Through flashbacks to 1972, the series showed Sarah as a fearless activist pursuing Everett.
In the flashbacks, Everett is shown as an aspiring singer and songwriter who lives in a VW van. Things begin to change for the better when Everett crosses paths with Sarah, who is hitchhiking.
