Final question, clue, and solution on Jeopardy! November 15, 2024

In the 20th Century Transportation category, the final question on November 15, 2024, episode was:

A 1947 article read, its “wings were not clipped by the Senate fisherman & ghost hunters after all”

The solution for the final question above was:

"What is the Spruce Goose?"

The Hughes H-4 Hercules, also known as the "Spruce Goose," was one of the most ambitious wartime projects ever undertaken in aviation, despite Howard Hughes' best efforts. Conceived as a part of the already existing supply strategy by Air Forces during World War II, this massive boat was designed as a strategic airlift flying boat.

Contrary to its nickname implying a spruce airframe, the model was actually made out of birch wood, which used special manufacturing technologies to make it lightweight yet durable like the other famous de Havilland DH 98 Mosquito.

On November 2, 1947, the aircraft sealed its legacy when it flew for the first and only time in Long Beach, California. This fine example of aviation history is now at the Evergreen Museum.
