The plot of Jailbreak: Love on the Run
In 2022, Vicky White was getting ready to retire from her job at the Lauderdale County Detention Center. She had worked there for 17 years. She was liked by all, be it her coworkers or her inmates. Vicky was known for being fair and kind. She was respected at the jail.
"She treated everybody like they were somebody," says Tyler Purser, a former inmate in the Jailbreak: Love on the Run.
As her retirement was near, Vicky made a strange comment to some of her coworkers. She said she would "go out with a bang." No one understood what she meant at the time. But it became clear on her last day, April 29, 2022. After her retirement party, Vicky told her colleagues she was taking an inmate, Casey White (not related), to the courthouse for a mental health check.
But Vicky and Casey never returned. The documentary, Jailbreak: Love on the Run shows how Vicky’s friends and colleagues tried to make sense of how a jail officer could fall in love with a convict and plan an escape. It looks closely at the events that led a respected officer to run away with an inmate.
Who are Vicky White and Casey White?
Vicky White was an officer at the Lauderdale County Detention Center. She was always a fair and helpful person. She was known for catching other officers who got too close to inmates or smuggled items into the jail. But in 2021, Vicky’s behavior began to change. She told some coworkers she was dating two men, one younger than her. She kept their names a secret.
This secrecy made people suspicious. The suspicion grew when inmates saw Casey White giving her letters without addresses. Casey White was a dangerous inmate with a long criminal record. He was already serving a 75-year sentence for heinous crimes.
In 2020, he was moved to the Lauderdale County Detention Center where he was waiting for a trial for a murder he confessed to. Even with his dangerous reputation, Casey could be friendly and charming when he wanted something. Some officers recall him pushing limits, like asking for hugs, to get closer to them.
