How does a fun game lead to tragedy in It’s What's Inside?

What Netflix's It's What's Inside creates is an intriguing mystery mixed with thrills while weaving a complex narrative. Reuben, who is getting married the next day decides to have a party with his friends from college. His friends who arrive at the party include Shelby, Cyrus, Nikki, Dennis, Maya, and Brooke. Forbes, who has been out of touch for decades, finally shows up.

The friends decide to open a mysterious suitcase containing a machine that Forbes and his crew have been working on for five years. This machine allows them to swap bodies. Forbes suggests a game of swapping, but after the second round things get weird. And viewers need to wait until the end to understand what is going on and why.

Despite a complex premise, the film ensures clarity on who is in whose body. The real suspense comes when Reuben and Brooke, in the bodies of Dennis and Maya, fall off a balcony and die on the spot. This leaves the rest of the group to decide what to do with the dead bodies and how to return to their original self.

They can't agree on what to do, so the survivors split into groups and plan ways to trick each other into getting what they want. But little do they know, they were all being tricked from the start.

Forbes was never Forbes to begin with. We soon learn that Beatrice stole Forbes' body and machine in retaliation for a party that happened years ago. Dennis hooked up with Beatrice during high school whilst he was still dating Nikki. This incident put Beatrice in a mental hospital and she was out for revenge.

Does everyone return to their bodies by the end of It’s What Inside?

No, by the time the movie It’s What's Inside ends only Shelby and Cyrus return to their bodies. Cyrus is in trouble as he is blamed for the deaths of Reuben and Brooke. Dennis uses Cyrus's body to call the police and tell them he had pushed them.

Maya is trapped in Brooke's body, Nikki is trapped in Reuben's body, Dennis is trapped in Forbes' body and Beatrice steals all of Dennis's trust fund money for herself. Now, she is in Nikki's body.

Nikki who is Beatrice drives away with the suitcase which comprises the machine after which we as viewers realise that it will not be the last time she uses the machine to swap bodies.
