After taking a break from Bravo's hit reality show Married to Medicine in Season 10, Dr. Contessa Metcalfe has made her return to the small screen for Season 11.
The medical professional and entrepreneur, who first joined the cast of Married to Medicine in Season 5, brings her unique blend of professional excellence and personal charm back to the Atlanta-based series that follows the lives of women in the medical field.
"It felt amazing. It was great coming back," Metcalfe tells EBONY in a recent interview.
She explained further:
"I feel like I dodged a bullet in Season 10 because I didn't have to try to understand how it would make sense for Tee to come into the group with her ex-husband there. It was just crazy. It's just been so much fun being back. It's kind of like riding a bike. These are some of my true friends...I see them even when we're not on camera."
How has it been with Dr. Contessa back on Married to Medicine?
Her return hasn't been without drama. Tensions quickly escalated between Metcalfe and former best friend Dr. Heavenly Kimes during a girls trip to the Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo in Florida. The friction continued into the group's latest couples trip to Key West, though both women maintained civility for the group's sake.
"I was on the show for five years. I mean I missed my friends!" Metcalfe explains about her decision to return.
Laughingly declaring:
"They were having fun without me."
During her break from Married to Medicine, Metcalfe kept busy with multiple ventures.
"I was able to do some fun things: I recorded three movies. We were able to acquire a building. It was a good year for us to really set down some goals and accomplish them," she shares.
The mother of three also continues to break barriers in her professional life.
"I'm Georgia Chair of the American Diabetes Association. How crazy cool is that?" she exclaims.
Metcalfe, currently working toward her fourth board certification, attributes her relentless drive to her upbringing. She often reflects on her childhood and the sacrifices her mother made, particularly as a teenage parent who had her first child at just 15 years old.
In the group, Metcalfe aims to be a unifying presence, striving to create a more cohesive dynamic among its members. Observing tensions and divisions on Married to Medicine—such as Quad being isolated while Fedra and Alicia formed their own alliance—she saw an opportunity to bridge the gaps and foster a sense of unity.
Her approach to the show remains grounded, as she embraces a supportive role rather than seeking the spotlight. She is content with contributing in any way she can, prioritizing the well-being of her friends and the harmony of the group over individual recognition.
Dr. Contessa’s personal evolution
At 48, Married to Medicine's Metcalfe approaches this new stage of her life with confidence and a carefree attitude.
Witty as she is, she refers to this period as her "naked girl season," blaming it on potential hormonal shifts like perimenopause that frequently make her feel hot. She embraces the present and places a high value on having fun, keeping a humorous outlook, and steering clear of needless seriousness.
The return to television also required family buy-in, particularly from her husband, Dr. Scott.
"All the women will tell you the men are like, 'They get nothing but the praise for being on the show,'" she reveals.
Elaborating:
"Making sure the kids are steady and in a safe space and there is not too much blowback. That's the hardest thing. My kids are older now. My kids are also on social media. My oldest is 16."
As Season 11 of Married to Medicine approaches its finale, Metcalfe appears content with her decision to return, bringing her authentic self and medical expertise back to the show that celebrates the intersection of medicine and reality TV drama.
