Waller is a streaming show that's set in the newly established DCU. The series which is yet to be filmed was announced back in January 2023 in a video by James Gunn. However, fans haven't heard much about the show for a while. Therefore, it was relieving to get an update about the Waller series still being in development by James Gunn in November 2024.
According to the reports, The Waller series is still in development as proposed by Steve Agee.
Amanda Waller's history in the DC movies until now
Actress Viola Davis has been playing Amanda Waller for almost a decade now. She made her debut as Waller in 2016's Suicide Squad which was directed by David Ayer, and has continued to play the role since then. She returned as Waller in 2021's The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1. The first season of Peacemaker follows the events of The Suicide Squad.
In The Suicide Squad, Waller deploys two Task Force X teams, (the first one is killed as a destination) to destroy Jötunheim, a lab dating back to the Third Reich. However, the real mission is to destroy the proof documenting the US' involvement in "Project Starfish", in which a giant alien starfish named Starro is experimented on for decades.
In the end, Rick Flag Jr. the leader of the team on the ground is killed by Peacemaker when the former decides to reveal the truth. While Peacemaker is shot by Bloodsport, the former survives it as revealed by Amanda Waller in the post-credit scene of The Suicide Squad. This sets up what's to come in the first season of Peacemaker.
Peacemaker Season 1, has Waller assign Christopher Smith/Peacemaker and team to thwart a secret alien invasion called "Project Butterfly". The team delivered a blow to Waller's reputation as one of the members, Amanda Waller's daughter Leota Adebayo exposed the Task Force program. Furthermore, she also exposed Waller's intentions to frame Cristopher to cover up evidence of the alien invasion.
Every team Waller created has managed to save the world and almost every time she has been an obstacle. Creature Commandos only continues this behavior pattern. In the fourth episode of Creature Commandos, Amazonian sorceress Circe shows Waller a vision of a bleak future in which Pokolistani Princess Ilana Rostovic has destroyed the world and killed every superhero.
Seeing this vision, Waller assigns a new task to the commandos, to kill the princess. However, in the season finale, she recalls this mission after finding out the professor who confirmed Circe's precognitive abilities was the shapeshifter Clayface. However, The Bride realizes the professor who confirmed the precognitive abilities were real and that Clayface killed her later.
Furthermore, it is revealed that Clayface was working for the Princess who wanted to throw Waller off her scent and then carry out her nefarious scheme to destroy the world. However, The Bride shoots Ilana dead, meaning, the day was saved again despite Waller and not because of her.
While it is unclear if we'll see her in Superman, we know that the Waller series will be influenced by what happens after Peacemaker Season 2. We know that because James Gunn himself confirmed it.
What do we know about the Waller series?
Currently, there is no release date for Waller, hopefully, we will have something about the series after Peacemaker Season 2 is released. For now, we know that Viola Davis will reprise her role as Amanda Waller and probably Steve Agee will also join her as John Economos. Agee revealed that the scripts for the show are still being worked on. He said:
“I think they’re still doing scripts, so there’s no set time yet, and James won’t start something until he’s absolutely happy with the scripts and they’re they’re ready to go. So once they’re ready, I’m sure he’ll announce a start time – as an actor who loves to work, it can’t happen soon enough, though, for me! (laughs)”
We also know the showrunner and writer working on Waller. It is written by Christal Henry, who had written the 2019 HBO series Watchmen. Jeremy Carver, is the showrunner for the series, after working in a similar capacity on Doom Patrol.
