The tale of forbidden love began in Stephenie Meyer's first novel surrounding a mortal teen, Bella, who's socially awkward and caught the attention of two mysterious and supernatural boys— Edward Cullen: a vampire, and Jacob Black, a werewolf.

Throughout the four books, their love triangle evolves, but in the end, it is Edward and Bella who are meant to be.

While the books were highly acclaimed and praised by readers, the Twilight franchise skyrocketed with fame after the release of the 2008 film adaptation of the first book. Featuring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner in the leading roles, the film franchise gained a global fanbase throughout its run.

As mentioned before, the story was then retold from the enigmatic vampire's perspective in Midnight Sun, which is now set to be adapted into an animated TV show. The book's completion was delayed due to a partial manuscript leak on the internet which led Meyer to to shelve the project until it came out in 2020.

Lionsgate Television had been developing and pitching the animated Twilight TV show for two years before Netflix acquired it and granted a straight-to-series order.

Now that the project has finally been greenlit, Meyer herself has joined to executive produce the series through her company Fickle Fish Films along with Meghan Hibbett.
