Netflix's newest miniseries, Toxic Town, which will premiere on February 27, 2025. The show recounts the efforts of mothers in the small town of Corby for their children.
Toxic Town is based on the true story of Corby poisonings in the 1980s, which took the small town of Corby by storm after many children were born with defects and deformities due to poor and toxic waste management.
The case, now known as the Corby toxic waste case, was decided in the High Court of Justice, London, on 29 July 2009.
The miniseries will depict one of the biggest environmental scandals in the UK, where Corby mothers took it upon themselves to hold those in power accountable for poor waste management.
More on Toxic Town in our story.
Netflix's Toxic Town is based on the true story of the Corby
Netflix's Toxic Town is based on the true story of the Corby poisonings in the 1980s. The miniseries is a dramatized account of a dire situation in the town of Colby, Northamptonshire, which became a heavily industrial area after the establishment of the Stewarts & Lloyds production site.
In 1980, mothers of thirty children submitted evidence to the High Court in London suggesting that they were subjected to contamination from the waste disposal during their pregnancies, which led to different birth defects in their children.
According to writer Jack Thorne (via Netflix's Tudum), he was unaware of this case, which is called the “British Erin Brockovich'':
“I’d never heard of the people involved, and I’d never heard of the case until it was brought to me by [my co-executive producers Annabel Jones and Charlie Brooker].”
He added:
“It’s not just this simple hero’s journey of women banding together and fighting the man and getting this court victory. There’s nothing simple about it at all. You see where their power comes from, which is really just in the most basic level of humanity that they show for each other.”
The miniseries will shed light on the women's efforts to bring down the town's council, who, in their greed and power, neglected the well-being of these unborn children, which led to deformities, some of which were even lifelong.
