Attention, The X-Files fans! The popular 90s sci-fi television series is gearing up for its reboot almost two decades after the original series. And the reboot is all set to be directed by Ryan Coogler.
When Chris Carter, the original creator, accidentally announced Ryan Coogler's upcoming reboot of The X-Files series, fans were left wondering about the plot, cast and more tidbits about the upcoming show. Recently, in a YouTube podcast (Last Podcast on the Left), Ryan Coogler shared some insights of the reboot of The X-Files. The Oscar-nominated director said,
"I'm working on X-Files, bro..that's what's immediately next. I have been excited about that for a long time, and I'm fired up to get back to it, and some of the episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really scary."
The 38-year-old award-winning filmmaker, well known for his projects including Black Panther (2018) and Sinners (2025), teased that the reboot of The X-Files will delve into the scare quotient, prioritizing horror elements for some episodes.
The X-Files Reboot: Ryan Coogler teases Gillian Anderson's possible involvement, addresses the sci-fi series' fans
When Ryan Coogler was asked about whether Gillian Anderson would reprise her role as Dana Scully, he replied,
"She's incredible, and you know, fingers crossed there. I can't wait to see her in Tron. I have seen a trailer for that. When I spoke to her, she was finishing that up. But yeah, we're going to try to make something great."
Gillian Anderson, the Emmy-winning actress, is a part of the upcoming sci-fi Tron franchise film, Tron: Ares. The film is all set to hit the screens in October 2025.
Lastly, Ryan Coogler spoke about the fans of The X-Files and how he is determined to make them happy with the reboot. He told,
"We are trying to make something great. Something for the real X-Files fans and maybe find some new ones too."
Thus, Coogler is also hoping to attract new fans/viewers for The X-Files reboot. After the poorly perceived revival seasons (2016 and 2018), fans are eager waiting for the reboot. However, as per Coogler's statements, it seems that the fans might have to wait a year or two for the release.
The X-Files: Plot and more
The original series, which featured David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, ran for eleven long seasons. While the original series spanned over nine seasons from 1993 to 2002, the tenth and eleventh seasons, revival seasons, came out in 2016 and 2018, respectively. Due to its massive success and popularity, The X-Files franchise released two films, one in 1998 and another in 2008.
The main plot of the series follows two FBI agents, Dana Scully, who is a skeptic and a doctor, and Fox Mulder, who is a believer. This pair investigates strange cases involving extraterrestrial life, the supernatural, and state secrets. The original series ended in 2002 for reasons that can be simplified into poor ratings, weak storyline, and the sudden exit of David Duchovny (who played Fox Mulder) as a regular cast member. Even though the revival seasons in 2016 and 2018 with the original pair being brought back, the viewers craved the vibes of the '90s sci-fi series.
