Amazon Prime Video's The Wheel of Time is adapted from a series of fantasy novels written by American author Robert Jordan and later completed by co-author Brandon Sanderson.
The high fantasy novels span up to fourteen novels, with many additional short stories, additional books, and games. Unfortunately, Jordan died in 2007 before he could complete the final installment in the series. It was later completed by his co-author Sanderson, with the help of Jordan's extensive notes.
The novels were adapted into a series, which premiered its Season 1 on November 19, 2021. The story follows Aes Sedai, a powerful organization of women, and Moiraine Damodred, one of its members, who choose five young males from a village. The organization believes that one of these males is the Dragon Reborn, who will either save the world from the Dark One or break it once more.
The first two seasons of the show adapted Jordan's first two books, The Eye of the World and The Great Hunt, respectively. The third season is based on Jordan's fourth book The Shadow Rising.

Showrunners talked about the challenges of adapting The Wheel of Time for television
The Wheel of Time books are extensive, spanning around 10,000 pages long with approximately thirteen volumes. Not only were the books challenging to adapt for their length, but also the source material, which contained elements of mythology and magic, was hard to adapt for television.
On The Wheel of Time premiere in 2021, showrunner Rafe Judkins and producers Marigo Kehoe and Mike Weber talked about the challenges of adaptation in an interview with Gizmodo:
''...we still treat them [books] like a bible in that the goal is to tell the story of the books. Sometimes we have to cut some stuff out or change things in order to do that effectively in the television space. If we did a word-for-word translation, it would not only be 2,000 episodes long, but it also wouldn’t necessarily represent what the books are really about.''
They added:
''We’ve tried to be as thoughtful as we can of any changes that we’re making or designed to better tell the heart of the story that’s in the books and most importantly, kind of the emotional journey of those characters.''
The Wheel of Time Season 3 will adapt the fourth book in the series
While The Wheel of Time Seasons 1 and 2 adapted the first two novels in the series, it was announced that Season 3 will adapt the fourth book, The Shadow Rising. While it is unclear why the makers skipped the third book, The Dragon Reborn, they could include some parts of it with the fourth book in Season 3, which will be released on Amazon Prime Video on March 13, 2025.
While the surviving main cast from the previous seasons will reprise their respective roles in The Wheel of Time Season 3, some new cast members have also joined. These include Synnøve Macody Lund as Melindhra, Salóme Gunnarsdóttir as Melanie, Isabella Bucceri as Faile Bashere, Björn Landberg as Rhuarc and Nukâka Coster-Waldau as Bair.
Season 2 ended with Lanfear facing Moghedien, one of the Forsakens, who revealed that Ishamael released all the remaining Forsakens before his death. The main characters are up for a challenge in the upcoming season.
The fourth novel also sees Rand, Mat, and Egwene heading to the Aiel Waste, after Rand is identified as the Car'a'carn, this storyline could be explored in the upcoming season on Prime Video.
