Is The Rookie reportedly getting a Spin-off? Creator Alexi Hawley shares updates 

The seventh season of The Rookie recently premiered on the ABC. As the latest season makes its journey through successive episodes, it was recently reported that The Rookie might be slated for expansion into a possible spin-off show.

This wouldn't be the first time, however, that the ABC show has had a spin-off to its credit. The Rookie: Feds was the spin-off starring Niecy Nash that ran just for one single season before it was unfortunately canceled in 2023.

According to a report by Popculture, the probable The Rookie spin-off could focus on "a male cop who is stepping into a new phase of life in his second act.” The show is speculated to be set against the backdrop of Washington State.

The Rookie creator and executive producer Alexi Hawley recently spoke in an exclusive interview with Pop Culture in which he revealed that he is currently writing the screenplay for the spin-off. All other details are yet to be announced.

What did Alexi Hawley reveal about the probable The Rookie spin-off?

As of now, it is widely believed that the spin-off is still in its nascent stages of development and that Alexi Hawley is busy writing the script for ABC. Hawley commented:

"I would probably shoot a pilot, and then we’ll see. It’s ultimately been very rewarding how much ABC really does with me on the show. They seem to really love us. We do well for them. But, you know, you still gotta earn it. I’m gonna write a great script, and then we’ll see what happens. But it’s exciting because I really do love this universe and these characters and the sort of tone of how we tell story. And so to do more of that would be great.”

It does not mean, however, that the spin-off shall be greenlit by the ABC executive right away once Hawley is done writing the screenplay. As is the custom with the network and the studio, the spin-off would be vetted at several levels before it goes into production. This might also mean that it does not ever see the light of day. The Rookie fans will just have to wait and watch.

Alexi Hawley opens up about The Rookie season 7

Alexy Hawley gave ScreenRant an exclusive interview earlier this month in which he spoke at length about the narrative and the creative decisions that were brought to bear on the ABC show's seventh season. When asked about self-doubt confronting the character of Nolan, Hawley explained:

"Yeah, I mean, given that he ended season 6 being shot for the first time in his life and his career and sort of forcing himself to come back probably a little too soon just because of Jason being out there and wanting to protect his wife and his family. And just to get to a place, whereas a man, as he says, of a certain age—not only did he come back too soon, but is he still up for the job?"

He further added:

"And so to get him to a place where in a split second moment he makes a decision and then second guesses it—it's just a very human thing to do. The joy of Nathan as an actor is he's not afraid to fall down. He's not afraid to be vulnerable and to fail. And so it just makes him very relatable to see him struggle a bit."
