Netflix’s The Recruit is an exciting spy thriller that follows a young lawyer working for the CIA. His life takes a dangerous turn when he gets involved with a former spy who threatens to leak highly classified information. Suddenly, his job becomes more than just legal work. It’s a fight for survival.
The show is loosely based on the experiences of Adam Ciralsky, a former lawyer for the CIA. Ciralsky’s time at the agency was not just about legal paperwork; he also ended up in a legal battle against them. His story inspired the intense, action-packed world of The Recruit, where the line between law and espionage is often blurred.
Interestingly, The Recruit is also the name of a novel by Robert Muchamore, the first book in the CHERUB series. This young adult series introduces characters like James Adams (formerly James Choke), Lauren Adams (formerly Lauren Onions), Kyle Blueman, and Kerry Chang. However, the Netflix show is not directly related to this book. It simply shares the same title.
What is The Recruit about
In the Netflix series, Owen, a young and inexperienced CIA lawyer, thinks his job is just about handling legal matters. But things change when he meets Max, a former Russian spy accused of murder. She knows too many secrets, and her knowledge makes her a target. Owen is thrown into the dangerous world of spies, where he must quickly learn how to navigate betrayals, secrets, and deadly missions.
Noah Centineo, who plays Owen, explained it best in an interview with Tudum. He said, “He thinks he’s just a lawyer, but in the CIA, you’re never just a lawyer.” The agency has its own rules, and nothing is ever as simple as it seems.
As Owen travels the world, trying to uncover the truth and protect himself, he realizes that being a CIA lawyer means being ready for anything—even life-threatening situations.
