Based on Søren Sveistrup’s novel, The Chestnut Man Season 1 premiered on Netflix on September 29, 2021, and was received well by both the audience and the critics. A hardcore Nordic crime thriller, the show was a perfect blend of suspense, twists, and tragedies that kept the viewers glued to their screens for 6 episodes.
However, despite the success of the first season, no official confirmation was given from Netflix regarding the renewal of The Chestnut Man. While fans have been eagerly waiting for a second season or at least an update on it, they can now rejoice because a standalone sequel series is coming and has been confirmed by Netflix.
Let us now explore all that is known about The Chestnut Man Season 2.
Is The Chestnut Man Season 2 happening?
Yes, it’s officially announced that The Chestnut Man will have a standalone sequel. This renewal news was not made separately and came as a part of the lineup of Nordic projects that will come to Netflix in the coming years, till 2026.
In a list of almost two dozen movies and shows, the sequel of The Chestnut Man was also mentioned. It has also been mentioned that Mikkel Boe Følsgaard and Danica Curcic will be returning to the sequel to reprise their roles as Mark Hess and Naia Thulin, respectively.
What could The Chestnut Man Season 2 be about?
Since the central mystery was completely solved by the end of The Chestnut Man Season 1, it makes sense that a standalone sequel is coming. There has been no update from Netflix regarding the plot of The Chestnut Man Season 2.
However, since it is a standalone project, it can be expected that the detectives will be dealing with a fresh new case, which might or might not have resemblances or connections to the first season case.
One thing that has a high potential to be explored in the sequel is the romance between Hess and Thulin, which ended rather abruptly in The Chestnut Man Season 1. Besides their personal life, their professional dynamic is also something that can be focused on in the second season.
However, since there is no official update on the storyline from Netflix, nothing can be said with certainty regarding what The Chestnut Man Season 2 will be dealing with.
Who all are associated with The Chestnut Man Season 2?
As already mentioned, Mikkel Boe Følsgaard and Danica Curcic will be returning to the cast. No further update has been given on the other cast members. Emilie Lebech Kaae and Dorte Warnøe Høgh will be writing this season and SAM Productions will be producing.
The conceptual director for The Chestnut Man Season 2 is Milad Alami and Stine Meldgaard Madsen and Morten Kjems Hytten Juhl are serving as producers.
What was The Chestnut Man Season 1 about?
The Chestnut Man Season 1 followed a figurine of a chestnut man being left at scenes of grisly murders and how the murder of a 41-year-old woman has ties to a 17-year-old girl’s murder a few years back.
The official synopsis mentions,
“The as-of-yet-unknown perpetrator has played an involuntary game of hide-and-seek with her by monitoring her in private situations and sending her pictures and videos in a steady stream together with what looks like a nursery rhyme. It quickly becomes clear that the murder can be linked to another unsolved case, where a 17-year-old high school student a couple of years ago was also subjected to a violent form of stalking before she was found dead.”
Hess comes back to Copenhagen and leads the case while working with Thulin, his former partner. Their relationship is shown to be complicated and their brief attempt at dating each other also ended suddenly and unsuccessfully with a lot of unresolved feelings.
The Chestnut Man Season 1 can be streamed on Netflix.
