Among the many characters that make an indelible mark on the viewer, Tate Dutton from Yellowstone is a prominent name. Tate Dutton is the real son of Yellowstone couple Kayce Dutton and Monica Dutton. He is also the only grandson of Evelyn and John Dutton. Against the backdrop of rural Montana, Yellowstone presents a moving account of the ups and downs of the Dutton family as they navigate the realities of owning the largest ranch in the country.
Tate Dutton, played by actor Brecken Merrill, has been part of the Yellowstone cast since the debut season. It is fair to say that his character has been at the epicenter of most of the action written by showrunner Taylor Sheridan, including a kidnapping. His character has steadily evolved over the years, earning a fond place in the scheme of things devised by Kevin Costner's John Dutton.
Tate Dutton effectively brings out a different side to the otherwise ruthless and formidable John Dutton, to the extent that viewers describe the scenes they share as among the most memorable from the show. Similarly, it can be surmised that the eventful life growing up around the ranch has made its mark on his childhood.
Tate Dutton's journey over the seasons on Yellowstone
Right from the debut season of Yellowstone, Tate Dutton's character brought a sense of innocence and hope to the show. He was portrayed as the next generation and the next in line to inherit the largest ranch in the country. Being close to his father, Kayce Dutton, and his grandfather, John Dutton, meant that Tate was privy to several determining moments in his family history.
During season two of the show, Tate was kidnapped by a neo-Nazi group acting under the instructions of the Beck brothers. The brothers had their eyes on the Dutton family ranch and the Broken Rock Indian reservation and wanted things to go in favor of their business interests. John Dutton responded quickly by realizing that Teal and Malcolm Beck were directly related to the abduction and led a group to rescue his grandson.
Tate was ultimately found by Kayce, who discovered his son in a washroom with his head shaved. Fortunately, Tate was not physically injured. Moving on to season four, adversity struck Tate once again. He and Monica were assaulted by a masked individual in the house, and Monica was subsequently injured. Tate then shoots the man with a gun and saves Monica from near death.
Kayce Dutton eventually arrived on the scene and rescued his family. During the fifth season of Yellowstone, all three, including Kaycee, Monica, and Tate, were caught up in a car crash but survived. However, Kaycee's unborn child was not so lucky.
Brecken Merill opens up about Yellowstone shooting experience
Being among the youngest cast members on the show, it is natural that Brecken Merill has the unique opportunity to learn from his fellow actors, who show him immense love and support. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Merill revealed a trying incident he had to go through while shooting the episode 'The Long Black Train' and how Kevin Costner encouraged him. He stated:
"Kevin says, 'Do you really, like, wanna do this? Is this what you really wanna do?' I thought about it for the next month, and he kind of guided me to that area of, yeah, this is what I wanna do. This is my career. This is my passion. It's super cold. It's zero degrees, but I'm loving it. I wanna be here. I just wanna thank Kevin. I'm so blessed to work with such an amazing cast."
