Supernatural, a common staple in The CW, finally concluded in 2020 with the fifteenth season. The popular TV series that ran for fifteen years on the network featured Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as brothers Dean and Sam Winchester, respectively. The series followed the brothers taking on a wide range of supernatural threats.

After being on air for nearly 15 years, the popular series aired its last episode on November 19, 2020. Despite its conclusion, every now and then, fans have come across rumors of Supernatural's return in the form of a miniseries, 2-hour movie, or even Supernatural Season 16, even though nothing is official as of now. Fans got a prequel in the form of The Winchesters, which got canceled after only a first season.

However, despite the cancellation of the prequels, fans are hopeful that the popular dark fantasy drama returns in one way or the other. The actors have also expressed a lot of interest in reprising these roles. This is based on the comment made by actor Jared Padalecki in a 2024 CBR interview.

What did Supernatural actor Jared Padalecki say? And how does it relate to Supernatural Season 16?

Ever since the show's conclusion, actors Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have expressed nothing but fondness for their Supernatural characters. It is known amongst fans that these two are open to returning as the Winchester brothers again. However, in April 2024, Padalecki was interviewed by CBR, in which the actor revealed a plan for a possible return.

The Supernatural actor was interviewed by CBR a week after the premiere of Walker Season 4. In that interview, the CBR interviewer asked the actor,

"Would you be open to returning to Sam Winchester? I feel like there are more stories for that character and, with The Winchesters done, it's a weird time to be a Supernatural fan with no new Supernatural on television for the first time in almost 20 years."

To this, Jared Padalecki responded:

"It is weird, right? It's weird for you to say that and weird for me to realize it. The simple answer to your question is 100%. I will play Sam Winchester again. Jensen will play Dean Winchester again. It's more of a timing and availability thing. In hindsight, Jensen and I have always said "always," if we ever have the option. I think in the last two or three seasons of Supernatural, when we realized somebody might want more, we said "2025. In 2020, we're ending this. Let's get together in five years and see what Sam and Dean are up to."

Padalecki further revealed that he was going to meet his co-star, Jensen Ackles, to speak with the latter about Supernatural Season 16. He said:

"I'm going to see him in a few weeks to talk to him about it again. We've talked about it a few times. He and I are both champing at the bit to see what these boys have been up to and what else good they can do in this world or the next. I'm excited about it."

He further added:

"My only contingency about it is, with Jensen and I being so protective of the show and the characters, the story has to be absolutely right. I don't just put on flannel and big coat, get in an Impala and say "Dean!" That won't work for Jared. It needs to have a purpose, as Sam and Dean always did."

Based on these comments, Jared Padalecki seems to suggest that if Supernatural were ever to return for a sixteenth season, it should have the right story and script.

All fifteen seasons of Supernatural are available to stream on the CW app.
