Next week will see the final showdown in The CW's Superman & Lois. With Tyler Hoechlin debuting as Superman in Arrowverse's Supergirl before finally headlining his own show in 2021, the run for his Superman is finally coming to an end.

The CW Network announced that Season 4 will be the concluding season for Superman & Lois. The decision to cancel the show after four seasons was considered due to budget and ratings issues.

The latest episodes of the show saw Lex Luthor donning his Steel suit (which he stole from John Irons) and Superman failing to fight Doomsday. The finale is expected to end Lex's war against the Kent family with one final showdown.

The series stars Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Alex Garfin, Michael Cudlitz, and Yvonne Chapman.

More about Superman & Lois final season in our story.

Why did The CW cancel Superman & Lois after Season 4?

Superman & Lois was revealed to end its run for Tyler Hoechlin's Superman after Season 4. And with the finale approaching next Monday, the show's end is near.

But with other DC shows from the Arrowverse stretching over 12 seasons, one might wonder why the network is canceling this fan-favorite show after just four seasons.

However, these network changes can be linked to the channel's acquisition by Nexstar. Since this acquisition, the channel has been trying to reduce the budget for its shows across all franchises. To implement these budget cuts, the network is also trying to move away from episodic scripted shows, which require huge budgets.

Following this, Season 4 was also downsized to ten episodes from the usual 15-episode runs in Seasons 1 and 2, respectively.

With most of the other The CW's Arrowverse shows already having their conclusions, it was only time the network would pull the plug on Superman & Lois to cut back on budget.

In addition, many recurring cast members also returned as guest stars on the show because of these factors.

Is DC Superman & Lois headed towards a tragic fate for Tyler Hoechlin's Superman?

While the show is ending after just four seasons, fans were eager to see a happy end for Tyler Hoechlin's Superman, one in which he will retire with his wife Lois and pass on his powers to his sons (who were also revealed to have superpowers early on in the show).

While fans lament the loss of Hoechlin's Superman, they are comforted that he will live a peaceful life with Lois. But DC's Superman and Lois might be setting up a tragic fate for the Man of Steel, as recent episodes hint.

Clark seems to be having problems with his powers, failing him at key moments. But nothing that a quick scan by John Henry Irons can't fix.

The scan revealed that General Sam Lane's heart is not compatible with his Kryptonian body, and he might die sooner than expected because his heart would give up. While Clark losing his powers would still have been a lesser blow, seeing him die would be tragic for Superman & Lois.

To make things worse, Lex stole John Henry Irons' Steel suit, which he will use for their potential finale fight in the show. Starlight's suit was already destroyed by Jon and Jordan, and now, with the Steel suit gone to Lex, things are not looking good for our Superhero.

Well, the fate of Superman is yet to be known in the final episode of the show. Catch the finale of Superman & Lois on The CW Network on December 2, 2024.
