Ayrton Senna da Silva was a Brazilian racing driver. He was considered among the legends of Formula One drivers and one of the greatest drivers in history. He was one of three Brazilians to become world champions, winning the title three times for McLaren. Ayrton secured 41 Grand Prix victories and held the record for most pole positions (65) until it was broken in 2006.

Tragically, a fatal accident occurred during the San Marino Grand Prix on 1 May 1994. On the 7th lap, Ayrton's car, traveling at a speed of 196 miles per hour (309 km/h), ran off the track at Tamburello and crashed into an unprotected concrete barrier during a hard braking maneuver.

The impact caused severe head injuries and during attempts by doctors and track medical staff to revive him, Ayrton's heart stopped. Although hospital doctors managed to restart his heart, he was kept on life support as his family asked a priest to administer the last rites.

It was later revealed that Ayrton had planned to unfurl an Austrian flag that he had secretly mounted on the car as a gesture to his team-mate Roland Ratzenberger, who had crashed and died in qualifying the day before.

The Brazilian government declared three days of national mourning as his body returned to Brazil for a state funeral. Three million people took to the streets of his hometown of São Paulo to pay tribute to him.
