CBS's long time runnig procedural NCIS has seen many famous faces star as guests in multiple episodes of the show.
Scott Wolf's role as Jonathan Cole in Season 9 proves that a small role can also have a big impact on the show, and people might remember the actor for that role.
While Wolf's breakthrough role is as Bailey Salinger in Part of Five, the actor has many credits under his belt. But in an recent interview, he revealed how people still remember him for his villainous role of Jonathan on NCIS Season 9.
Wolf is currently starring as Richard Miller on Fox's medical drama Doc. More about his role and impact on NCIS in our story.
Exploring Scott Wolf's role from NCIS Season 9
Scott Wolf played the character of Jonathan Cole, who was introduced in the NCIS Season 9 premiere. He was a member of the Phantom Eight, a Special Ops Team. His character was in a bit of a grey area as he believed in achieving the greater good by taking out and killing people, which was a part of his job.
He appeared in only three episodes of the show during Season 9, but his character is still quite memorable because he wanted to kill Michael Weatherly's Tony. He even tries to kill him in one of the episodes, and since Tony is a fan-favorite NCIS character, Cole has become a memorable character, even in his short arc.
His storyline finally comes to fruition in the finale, where he makes a big sacrifice for the team by saving Gibbs.
How was Cole's character redeemed in the NCIS Season 9 finale?
While Cole was a ruthless killer throughout NCIS Season 9, and he was a danger to Gibbs' team, he finally redeemed himself in the finale. In the Season 9 finale, a bomb is delivered to the Navy Yard, which would have perished the whole team, along with Gibbs.
When confronted with their dooming fate, Cole and Gibbs measure their actions when the former steps in and asks Gibbs to leave. In a heroic moment, Cole offers to sacrifice himself for the team, but Gibbs doesn't comply. But eventually, he martyrs himself for the greater good and dies while saving Gibbs and his team.
In a recent interview with TVInsider, Wolf discussed how he is still recognized for his role on the show:
“I did three episodes, I don’t even know how long ago, and I might get stopped for that in airports as much as anything else. It’s a very popular show, obviously. But there was something about the fact that they made a little arc out of that character, and he wasn’t a one-off, shoot people and go away [character].”
He added:
''he [Cole] was a villain, he was like this rogue ex-Navy Seal who wanted to shoot people and harm people. But they wound up sort of redeeming him in the end.”
Many Reddit users mimic Wolf's thoughts and think that his character was redeemed in the end. For instance, u/nodaybuttoday__ thinks:
''His death made me really really sad. Like he knew he had betrayed his country but in the end he just wanted to help.''
Another user, u/20daysleft thinks that this storyline was the best on the show:
''It was actually my favorite storyline and I too grew to like him, even though he was a bad guy.''
There are also some users like u/OkGuitar3773, who know that Cole was a bad guy on the show but can't help liking him, partly because he redeemed himself in the end:
''He was a really good bad guy!''
Considering Wolf's and the show's popularity, it is no wonder that people still remember the actor for his villainous three-episode arc on the show.
