Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is a prelude to Game of Thrones. Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, played by Eve Best, is the main character of the series. She is nicknamed “The Queen Who Never Was” because her throne was passed over to her cousin Viserys I. She is a well-known dragon rider and a key figure in the Targaryen family.

This same plot can be seen in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book and the series. However, in the book, the main cause of her death is the Battle of Rook’s Rest, a pivotal episode of the civil war of Targaryen. Similarly, there are changes if the characters’ arcs in the book and the series are compared.

Differences between Rhaenys’s plot in the book and the series

Rhaenys Targaryen is a character whose role evolves with passion in the Song of Ice and Fire series. She was the daughter of Prince Rhaegar and Elia Martell, and she faced several challenges in her lifetime.

Her character is primarily shaped and constituted by the events during Robert’s Rebellion, a civil war aimed at deposing her father from the Iron Throne. Rhaenys, together with her brother Aegon and mother Elia, were horrifically slaughtered during the Sack of King’s Landing.

Such brutality is a pinnacle moment of the plot development, turning the tides even more against the Targaryens as their usurpers stand in their way. On the other hand, the new series of House of the Dragon, which is a prequel show based on Martin’s book “Fire & Blood” re-envisions the Targaryen chain of events.

However, the fans believe the series doesn’t directly feature Rhaenys like how the book presented her. The show focuses on a time when the Targaryens were at their peak of civil war. The main distinction between these two representations is their chronology and narrative emphasis. For example, in “A Song of Ice and Fire,” Rhaenys’s short and brutal existence incites the killing and hatred that dominates the plot.

However, in House of the Dragon, the older Rhaenys Targaryen’s narrative revolves more about coping with unfairness and managing politics rather than engaging in politics directly. They are both tragic royals to some degree, yet their roles and importance in the story differ widely between the novel and the movie.

House of the Dragon is a prequel to Game of Thrones, set 200 years before the original series. The drama, based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, follows House Targaryen through a civil conflict known as the Dance of the Dragons. This conflict almost destroyed the Targaryen family and weakened the Seven Kingdoms, creating the basis for the events of Game of Thrones.

The series revolves around the war for the Iron Throne, with characters such as King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine), Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), and Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith). The program has political turmoil, family tension, wars, and lots of dragon action.

HBO and HBO Max provide the 10 episodes of the first season and 8 episodes of the second season of House of the Dragon. Beginning at the outset of the Targaryen battle, the series depicts the course of the power struggle. It gives a deeper look at the rise and hardships of the Targaryen family and enriches Westeros’ history with a compelling plot and a brilliant cast.
