Amazon Prime Video has greenlit season 3 of Good Omens. However, with the ongoing s*xual assault allegations against Neil Gaiman, this season is going to be very different from the previous ones.
Season 1 was based on the novel by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett and followed the demon Crowley, played by David Tennant, and angel Aziraphale, played by Michael Sheen, who developed a unique relationship through the centuries they spent together on earth.
It was speculated that season 2 was based on an unpublished sequel of the novel. However, Gaiman then informed that the planned sequel was not season 2 and it would be used for season 3.
However, then came the s*xual assault allegations, and that changed the whole plan. It has recently been revealed that season 3 will have one 90-minute-long episode and Gaiman has stepped away from the project.
Is there a release date for Good Omens Season 3?
Amazon had renewed Good Omens for its third and final season quickly. However, at this point, there is no concrete release date available. The allegations against Gaiman and the eventual exit of the writer from the show have affected the production schedule.
Though the latest updates, as confirmed by Screen Rant mention that filming of Good Omens Season 3 will be starting early 2025, nothing has been mentioned about the release date.
By the looks of it, fans will probably have to wait a long time before the final season is released.
Who is in the cast of season 3?
It is expected that the final season of Good Omens will mostly see the return of familiar faces. Michael Sheen of Underworld, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn fame will be returning as Aziraphale, the angel, and David Tennant of Doctor Who fame will be back as Crowley, the demon.
Season 2 of Good Omens brought back John Hamm of Mad Men, The Morning Show fame as Gabriel and he was a massive part of the story.
Maggie Service of Red Dwarf fame and Nina Sosanya of Screw also returned for Good Omens Season 2 but were cast as completely different characters. One interesting thing that Gaiman had said about the casting of Good Omens to SFX was:
"With anybody that I wanted to bring back, but didn’t have room for right now, I did not have to bring them back as themselves."
This means that even though the writer is no longer associated with the show, the chances of any of the past actors returning for this season, even if for a different role are very high.
The list of presumptive cast for Good Omens Season 3 besides the already mentioned ones include:
- Doon Mackichan as Michael
- Miranda Richardson as Shax
- Gloria Obianyo as Uriel
- Quelin Sepulveda as Murie
- Liz Carr as Saraqael
- Shelley Conn as Beelzebub
What can we expect from season 3?
The storyline for season 3 was set up during the last moments of season 2. It was in those moments that the show turned itself on its head, morphing into a drama capable of breaking the viewer’s heart while previously it was mostly lighthearted and funny.
Season 2 followed Aziraphale and Crowley helping Gabriel who came to earth to find Beelzebub, whom he secretly loved. However, in the process, the show revealed itself for what it was about, which meant it showed how the show was actually regarding Crowley and Aziraphale admitting their love for each other.
The final season is most likely to have everything that the previous season had only with stakes that are much bigger than before.
Aziraphale and Crowley’s budding romance might take a backseat as well since they might have to deal with another Armageddon situation and also save the world from the looming threat of the end of the world.
However, despite the season being cut short to a single 90-minute episode, the same conclusion is likely to be reached.
Good Omens seasons 1 and 2 can be streamed on Prime Video.
