Yes, Reacher Season 3 Episode 4, titled "Dominique" is a look back into the past. It is a throwback to Dominique Kohl's contribution to Quinn's case. It lets us see an emotional Reacher too! And frankly, that's a rare sight. Fans of the show are given a heartfelt look at an important figure from Reacher’s military days. Sergeant First Class Dominique Kohl.
Well, if you’ve been following the season, you know Reacher doesn’t just forget people, especially those who mattered. And Dominique? She mattered. The episode cleverly interweaves the past and present. It brings back memories of Reacher’s mission with Kohl to track down Xavier Quinn. He is a rogue military intelligence officer who was selling classified information.
Reacher and Kohl were a solid team. In fact, they were a dream team. Both of them combined had the smarts to outwit any enemy. Kohl was smart, capable, and had the same relentless drive as Reacher. But their camaraderie didn't last long as she was brutally killed during the mission. This is what made Quinn one of Reacher’s worst enemies—a personal one at that.
Now, in Season 3, Quinn returns but with a new identity called Julius McCabe. Reacher has no other way but to confront the past he never really let go of. And we all know when Reacher has unfinished business, someone's about to regret their life choices.
Reacher Season 3: Dominique Kohl was more than just a protégé
This episode is special for various reasons. One, we see an emotional Reacher. Two, it shows us what Quinn actually did. Three, we meet the person whose loss meant a great deal to our otherwise tough drifter hero.
Kohl wasn’t just another soldier under Reacher’s command. She was ambitious, fiercely intelligent, and extremely brave. And she made quite the impression on Reacher within a few minutes of meeting him.
Reacher doesn't usually keep a chair for others to hang out in his office. But he asked for a chair just so Kohl could sit. This meant he liked her from the very beginning.
He liked how she thought, how sharp her observations were, how she knew to ask the exact right things in an interrogation. If things had gone differently, she could have been the Robin to Reacher's Batman.
In the flashbacks, we see Kohl and Reacher working together on the Quinn case. Their dynamic feels more like a partnership and less like a superior-subordinate relationship. Reacher saw potential in Kohl, and she trusted his instincts completely. Their bond made her death even more devastating. It was a deeply personal loss for Reacher.
Reacher carries his losses with him. And Kohl wasn’t just a memory. She was someone who really made a mark on him.
Quinn’s return
Coming to the present, the past isn’t done with Reacher yet. He, along with Agents Duffy and Villanueva, finds out that Julius McCabe is actually none other than Xavier Quinn. Talk about old wounds being ripped open.
Reacher isn’t just going after Quinn for the mission. This is personal. And when things get personal for Jack Reacher, well, let’s just say Quinn better watch his back.
Episode 4 does an excellent job of connecting the past and present. It shows how unfinished business always finds a way back. It also gives us a glimpse into Reacher’s emotional depth. That's something we don’t always see. Under all the action and brute strength, this guy carries real pain.
So, what’s next? With Quinn’s identity exposed Reacher is about to make sure the past finally catches up with him. And knowing how Reacher operates? It won’t be pretty.
