Deirdre Norman murders a man after asking him out on a date. Alex believes that someone like Deirdre, who has psychopathic tendencies, is not amenable to treatment and should remain in prison for the safety of others. The judges agree and sentence her to life imprisonment. However, Deirdre is assaulted by other prisoners and eventually commits suicide when she can no longer stand the abuse.
Later, Peter is revealed to be the one stalking Alex, seeking revenge for Deirdre's murder. He also learns that Nancy, the adoptive mother who has also been teaching Damon to play the piano, had also adopted young Peter and Nolan. Nancy’s crimes in the series Cross
Nancy's grief turns to anger as she seeks revenge. Keeping the fact aside that she had persuaded Dierdre to take the blame for Peter's actions, she blames Alex for her daughter's death. She sends Peter to kill Alex’s wife, Maria, in order to make him feel the pain of losing the one he loves. Although Maria is innocent; she is only targeted because of her relationship with Alex.
Nancy's pain never goes away either, even after she takes Maria out of the picture, she can't let go of Dierdre's death and plans a bigger plot against Alex Cross and his family. Taking advantage of Alex's trusting nature, she convinces him to send his children with her. She tells him that this way, they will be away from their mother's killer.
Alex agrees, unaware of Nancy's true intentions. Later, when Alex finds out that Nancy is the killer, he rushes to save his children, but Nancy has them at her gunpoint. She forces Alex to choose one child. She wants him to feel the same pain that she did when she had to choose between Peter and Dierdre.
Alex talks his way out of it. He makes Nancy realize the weight of her crimes, and that the guilt she carries is due to her actions towards her children. As this realization washes over her, Nancy self-exits after being unable to cope with the guilt in the season 1 finale of Cross.
