MobLand, the new gritty crime drama available on Paramount Plus, debuted on March 30, 2025. The story of the series revolves around the enmity between two crime families who are trying to gain the upper hand in their line of work, which in turn creates friction between them.
It is directed by Guy Ritchie, who is known for his works in the crime genre, and created by Ronan Bennett (Top Boy, The Day of the Jackal) and not Taylor Sheridan. But why does it feel like a Taylor Sheridan show? Well, other than the use of crime genre and the same streaming service, there are many reasons, such as the characters and their dynamics, that make it look like a Taylor Sheridan-helmed show, like Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and Landman.
More on this in our story.
Is MobLand a Taylor Sheridan show? Details explored
Created by Ronan Bennett and directed by Guy Ritchie, MobLand follows the two families, the Harrigans and the Stevensons, and their fight to be the top in London’s crime scene. While watching the show, you might be unable to shake the feeling of watching a Taylor Sheridan show, and that is for several valid reasons.
Starting with the streaming service, all of Sheridan’s western and crime dramas are available on Paramount Plus, where MobLand is streaming as well. But that’s not all that links Sheridan to the Tom Hardy-starrer show. One of the production houses of all Taylor Sheridan shows is Studio 101, which is also MobLand’s production house.
Although you won’t see any horses or ranches on the Guy Ritchie show, the themes of the show are also similar to Sheridan’s numerous dramas on Paramount Plus. For instance, MobLand and Sheridan’s TV shows do not shy away from depicting violence. Moreover, the depiction of power struggles between individuals shown in many of these dramas makes it feel like watching a Taylor Sheridan show.
The most important similarity would be the complex family dynamics shown in the series. Sheridan’s shows has a way to address complicated family relationships in his various shows, which is also another common factor between the shows and MobLand as we have seen how Harry’s (Tom Hardy) family is going through tough time due to his involvement in the Harrigans’ matter and also the tangled and multifaceted relationships between the Harrigans.
MobLand’s cast and characters appear similar to Taylor Sheridan’s characters
Other than themes, another important reason why MobLand feels like a Sheridan show is due to the characters. For instance, Tom Hardy in the crime drama plays Harry, a fixer for the Harrigans, who is required to solve various levels of their family problems that could land them in serious trouble with the rival family, the Stevensons, or the police. Similarly, in Sheridan’s show, Mayor of Kingstown, the character of Jeremy Renner, Mike McLusky, belongs to a family of mediators who help keep peace in the company town of Kingstown.
Other than that, both the MobLand and Sheridan’s recent drama, 1923, have Helen Mirren as the tough matriarch of the family. Another similarity would be her playing the Irish wife in both series. In MobLand, she plays Pierce Brosnan’s Irish wife and in 1923, Harrison Ford’s.
Therefore, there are many similarities between MobLand (created by Ronan Bennet) and the numerous shows in the Sheridan universe, which is why it is the perfect replacement, as 1923 has already concluded, and while you are waiting for another gritty tale from Taylor Sheridan, you can enjoy this new drama.
