In an interview, Matthew Gray Gubler seemingly confirmed a return to the show Criminal Minds: Evolution. Known for playing Dr. Spencer Reid, he appeared in all 15 seasons of the original Criminal Minds. However, he was not a part of the show's revival, Criminal Minds: Evolution, in the first two seasons.
In an interview, Gubler said briefly that he shot a new episode of Criminal Minds.
I shot a new episode of Criminal Minds, I'm working on a film about Halloween, and I'm doing shows, comedies in theater around America.
This could be a sense of relief for the fans, but we will have to wait to confirm if he was speaking about being in front of the camera or directing,, as he had gone behind the lens for a few episodes during the show's original run.
What if Gubler returned to the Criminal Minds: Evolution as Dr. Reid?
The show Criminal Minds: Evolution has the character Reid on sabbatical, so his return totally depends on Gubler and the makers. What actually happened to him in Criminal Minds' season 15 finale also affects his return.
Dr. Reid suffered a serious brain injury that compelled him to confront his past and consider his future. He started hallucinating, which played a key role in digging up his internal conflicts. He questioned if he wanted to work with BAU or pursue a different path after his recovery.
Erica Messer, the showrunner of Paramount Plus, in an interview, said that she would love to have Dr. Reid back in the show, but also revealed that nothing was certain on account of the actor's busy schedule.

According to some reports, Gubler has been locked in to play the lead in a pilot produced by CBS. Gubler has also written two children's books, Rumple Buttercup: A Story of Bananas, Belonging and Being Yourself. More recently in 2023, Matthew published The Little Kid with the Big Green Hand. Since Criminal Minds ended, the actor has taken up various roles, such as in the Netflix production, Horse Girl, where he starred with Alison Brie. He also had a recurring part in the show, Dollface.
