As of March 16, 2025, Long Bright River has not been renewed for a second season on Peacock. The Peacock thriller series, which premiered on March 13, 2025, with all eight episodes out at once, was originally pitched as a limited series with Amanda Seyfried in the lead role.

Based on Liz Moore's award-winning 2020 novel of the same title, the series follows Philadelphia police officer Mickey (Seyfried) as she patrols a neighborhood ravaged by the opioid epidemic in search of her missing sister, Kacey (Ashleigh Cummings), who struggles with addiction.

The timing of Kacey's disappearance aligns with a string of murders in the neighborhood, building a suspenseful mystery with personal ramifications. Although no official announcement has been made by Peacock regarding the fate of the show, industry analysts note that the series was developed as a standalone adaptation of Moore's single novel.

Given the self-contained nature of the source material and the conclusive season finale, the likelihood of renewal seems slim, even in the absence of confirmation from the creators or the network.

Current renewal status of Long Bright River and Creator's response

In an interview with Variety, showrunners Liz Moore and Nikki Toscano were asked about the possibility of a second season, to which Moore replied:

"I feel like that’s classified information.

Toscano added:

"That’s a decision that’s, like, way above our pay grade. So I think we’ll just leave it at that. For both Liz and I, any opportunity to work with these actors again would be awesome, and we would be game to do it in any capacity.

The lack of comment from Peacock regarding a second season says volumes. Carter Matt reports that Long Bright River was "always intended to be a limited series" rather than a multi-season show.

A review from The Review Geek concurs, concluding that the series "will not be renewed" due to the nature of the source material and the season finale's definitive resolution.

Although fans may anticipate renewal news, Peacock generally evaluates multiple factors before making such decisions, including first-viewing metrics, completion rates, and audience retention.

So far, no announcement has been made by showrunner Nikki Toscano or other creative team members regarding any plans for Long Bright River Season 2. As a result, speculation remains based on the show's classification as a limited series and its faithful adaptation of Moore's novel.

Show premise and critical reception

Long Bright River revolves around the strained relationship between two sisters whose lives have taken vastly different paths in Philadelphia. As described by NBC Insider, the show follows police officer Mickey (Seyfried), who works in a poverty-stricken area heavily affected by the opioid crisis while searching for her missing sister.

Showrunner, executive producer, director, and writer Nikki Toscano called the adaptation:

"a poignant love story between two sisters as it seamlessly moves between the past and present."

Since its March premiere, the series has received positive reviews from critics and audiences, with special praise for Seyfried's performance. Toscano hinted that the Emmy-winning actress delivers a portrayal unlike anything audiences have seen from her before.

The series stays true to the novel's exploration of addiction, family bonds, and the socioeconomic struggles of formerly industrial American cities.

Factors influencing potential continuation

Several factors weigh against a second-season renewal despite the show's positive reception. First, Long Bright River fully adapts Liz Moore's standalone novel, leaving no source material for further continuation. Unlike anthology series that retain their title while exploring new stories each season, this show's narrative appears to have reached a definitive conclusion.

Also, star Amanda Seyfried "has been more willing to do limited series than ones that are necessarily intended to run a good five or six seasons," Carter Matt writes, though they add "that could change."

Another challenge is the competitive streaming landscape, with Peacock needing to stand out amid a crowded field of crime dramas, including HBO’s new Philadelphia-set series Task, starring Mark Ruffalo.

Without any statements from the creators expressing interest in expanding beyond the novel’s scope, renewal prospects remain slim.

In short, while Long Bright River has neither been officially canceled nor renewed for Season 2, all signs indicate it was always intended as a self-contained limited series. The full adaptation of the novel, the definitive season finale, and the lack of creator commentary on potential continuation strongly suggest that the show was designed to be a single-season project. However, Peacock has not made an official announcement regarding its future.
