Following the premiere of Squid Game season 2 on Netflix, there are speculations that the show might have an exciting addition to its already stellar cast. According to a report by a South Korean media outlet, Leonardo DiCaprio is rumored to be joining the show.

The Koran survival thriller series is one of the biggest shows on Netflix and has consistently broken streaming records. It follows a group of contestants struggling with debts who are allowed to earn a massive amount of money if they participate and win some deadly challenges.

The reports of Leonardo DiCaprio joining Squid Game season 3 started doing the rounds on January 1, 2025. However, Netflix has confirmed that these are rumors and that the Hollywood star will not be seen in the show.

Leonardo DiCaprio is not joining Squid Game season 3

Netflix has confirmed that they have not cast Leonardo DiCaprio in Squid Game season 3. Following the speculations, the streamer released an official statement and refuted the claims of the actor's involvement in the series. The statement read:

“We’ve also heard rumors about Leonardo DiCaprio’s appearance, but they are not true.”

The rumors started circulating when South Korean media house OSEN reported that the Titanic actor would have a cameo role in the show's upcoming season. Though the show is set in South Korea, the makers were said to be working to include Leonardo DiCaprio in Squid Game season 3.

The report also suggested that DiCaprio had already filmed for his portion in the show, and the shooting was carried out in complete secrecy in 2024. However, with the official statement, Netflix has confirmed the reports are false, and Leonardo DiCaprio is not going to be seen in Squid Game season 3.

The series creator previously expressed his interest in casting Leonardo DiCaprio in the show

The reports of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Squid Game casting also gained traction as series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had previously expressed his interest in making the actor a part of the series. He also revealed DiCaprio is a fan of the show. Dong-hyuk said during a press conference after the release of the first season:

“There will be no known Hollywood actor in Season 2. That’s not in the plan and if the stage changes, maybe in Season 3 – but for Season 2, it is still set in Korea. Leonardo DiCaprio did say he’s a big fan of Squid Game, so maybe if time or chances allow, we can ask him to join the games.”

Series star Lee Jung-Jae, who plays Seong Gi-hun, expressed his desire to work with Leonardo DiCaprio as well. The two actors met and posed together during the LACMA Art + Film Gala in Los Angeles. In 2022, Jung-Jae was asked if he would like to see any Hollywood actor in his hit show, on which he took DiCaprio's name.

Meanwhile, Squid Game season 2 is shattering streaming records. The season premiered on Netflix season 2 and garnered 68 million views within the first three days of its release, becoming the most-watched premiere on the streaming platform.

Season 2 continues the story of Gi-hun, who returns to the game in the hopes of ending the lethal event once and for all. He is joined by 455 new players, who have entered the games to get rid of their financial issues while being unaware of the stakes.

Apart from Jung-jae, the second season stars Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-joon, Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-shim, Lee Seo-hwan, Park Gyu-young, Choi Seung-hyun, and Gong Yoo.

The series' third season will be released on Netflix in 2025.
