Taylor Sheridan's 1923 Season 2 premiered on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at midnight ET/9 PM PT on Paramount +. The crime drama series in the first season has introduced us to a star-studded cast, including Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton, Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton, and Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton.
Apart from them, Jennifer Carpenter has joined the cast of 1923 Season 2, adding a new dynamic to the show. Popularly known for playing the role of scream queen in The Exorcism of Emily Rose and as Debra Morgan in Dexter, Jennifer has bagged the SAG, Critics Choice, and MTV Movie Awards in her two-decade-long career.
The Paramount + series is based on the lives of the Duttons in the plague and drought-stricken areas of the Mountain West in the early twentieth century. 1923 Season 2 is based on the heads of the Dutton family, Jacob and Cara trying to save their Yellowstone ranch from harsh weather and money-hungry intruders.
Who does Jennifer Carpenter play in 1923 Season 2?
The newly introduced cast member, Jennifer Carpenter, plays the role of Mamie Fossett, a U.S. deputy Marshal in 1923 Season 2. In the trailer, Mamie Fosset donning a cowboy hat points a gun at Spencer Dutton and inquires,
"You're 30 miles from anything, where are you heading?"
While Spencer nods his head and replies, "Montana". It would be interesting to see where would this tense interaction lead to.
Mamie Fossett, an upfront and no-nonsense Deputy Marshall is introduced in 1923 Season 2 Episode 2 'The Rapist is Winter'.
1923 Season 2 begins with Father Renaud and Marshal Kent out on a hunt for Teonna Rainwater, who escaped the abusive convent in Montana. They traced her to Oklahoma, where they met the U.S. Deputy Marshal Mamie Fossett. Initially, the two men questioned Mamie's abilities for her job. To which, a confident Mamie calls out Kent for doubting her ability just because she is a woman. Mamie tags Kentas a 'bigot' and warns him.
Interestingly, the 1923 Season 2 character Mamie Fossett is based on the real-life brave and fiery U.S. Deputy Marshal Mamie Fossett. Although not much is known about her, an old San Francisco Chronicle released on February 16, 1898 states,
"Miss Mamie Fossett and Miss S.M. Burche are Deputy United States Marshals in Oklahoma. Miss S.M. Burche and Miss Momie Fossett are the first women to do active field work as United States deputy marshals. They are young, good looking, educated and full of the wild West spirit."
The newspaper cutting further states that the brave duo's first work was investigating a murder case in Indian territory. Miss Mamie Fossett and Miss S.M. Burche's works are described as,
"They got the witnesses and have just returned from the trip. They say they are ready to go after any man wanted for any kind of crime. Everybody who knows them corroborate this declaration."
Jennifer Carpenter on playing Mamie Fossett in 1923 Season 2
Jennifer Carpenter has shared her experiences of joining the 1923 Season 2 cast. In an interview with the Town and Country Magazine, she said,
"I've never felt more privileged as an actor to be a part of something. Just for prosperity, I can't believe that this will be left behind when I'm not here anymore. I'm very proud to be a part of it."
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, when Jennifer Carpenter was asked about how she felt playing the real-life US Deputy Marshal Mamie Fossett she said,
"I was able to find about 10 sentences about the actual Mamie Fossett. She probably came to this territory looking to homestead, it didn't work out for one reason or another, and so she signed up to be a U.S Marshal."
Jennifer Carpenter continued,
"She joined as a U.S Marshal not to work behind a desk but to go into the territory and try to pull the criminals out, which was the deadliest work that one could do it that time. Having that as the framework of who she was was a nice place to start."
