Hulu cancels Rothwell's How To Die Alone after Season 1

As per an exclusive report by Variety, Hulu has canceled Rothwell's How To Die Alone after just one season.

The show sits on a sound rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and received positive reviews from critics, calling it a 'witty comedy' with scope for more. Hulu's decision to cancel the show after just one season comes as a surprise.

Rothwell took to her Instagram to announce this disheartening news with her fans, but hopes that the show will find a home again on another platform:

''My heart aches for the incredible cast, crew and writers who gave their all to tell this story. I’m so grateful to have had this opportunity, and appreciate all of the love and support given to me and the show. Now, my prayer is that this news will be but a comma in the HTDA story, not a period. Onward.''

In an interview with Variety, Rothwell revealed how it took her almost eight years to write and get How To Die Alone on the floors and that it was 'disheartening' to see it get canceled after just one season.

While Rothwell was shocked at Onyx's decision to cancel the show, it was reported that the show's viewership was not strong enough to renew it for another season. However, the positive reviews tell a different story.

Rothwell was disheartened by this news as her statement in an interview with Variety proves:

“Representation isn’t just about visibility — it’s about ensuring that our stories, our existence and our cultural contributions are not erased.”

In Variety's interview, Rothwell called the show:

“an undeniable critical, creative and award-winning success.”

Rothwell won the Celebration of Cinema and Television Award in the producer category in 2024. The show was also nominated for the 2025 NAACP Image Awards in three categories.
