In Apple TV+’s Silo, the stakes are always high for characters as they try to survive in a giant silo while the outside world gets destroyed and becomes too toxic for living. The show follows the journey of Juliette Nichols, an engineer turned sheriff.
Juliette gets embroiled in the mystery of what happened to the world while trying to solve the murder case of her boyfriend. The show features various other characters, who take up different jobs in the underground community.
One of these characters is Holston Becker, the sheriff played by David Oyelowo. After spending the first season investigating what is actually going on in the community, Holston dies in the finale episode.
Holston Becker dies in Silo season 1 finale
Holston Becker is the Sheriff of Silo 18, who lives a normal life at the beginning of the show with his wife, Allison Becker, played by Rashida Jones, who works in the IT department. The couple dreams of having a baby which initiates a chain of events that do not end well for both of them.
Holston and Allison are allowed to try for a baby one last time after two failed attempts. However, by the end of the year, they still are not able to conceive. Allison then starts to suspect that something might be wrong in the community.
She discovers that the people in charge of the Silo get to decide who gets to and who does not get to have children. The revelation shakes her belief in their way of life, and she desperately removes a birth control implant that should have already been taken out.
Then, she makes a public scene, saying she wants to leave the Silo. In their world, asking to go outside means being exiled, which is a death sentence. Holston, as Sheriff, has no choice but to oversee his wife's exile.
He watches helplessly from the cafeteria as Allison steps outside into what looks like a green and beautiful world. She cleans the sensor for the people inside to see more clearly but soon dies from the toxic air.
Her death devastates Holston, leaving him full of guilt and questions about why she made that choice and what the outside world is really like. Two years later, Holston meets Juliette while she investigates the mysterious death of her boyfriend, George Wilkins.
He learns that George had a connection to Allison and dealt with forbidden relics from the old world. Holston and Juliette work together to uncover the truth and discover George’s secret hiding place along with a hard drive with some important information, including notes written by Allison.
These discoveries push Holston to dig deeper into what happened to his wife. As Holston investigates, he starts to suspect that the Silo’s residents are being watched through hidden cameras in their mirrors.
He places flowers in front of his mirror and hides the hard drive in a medical ward. He also starts preparing for his departure and leaves behind clues and evidence for others to find.
Three months after meeting Juliette, Holston decides to follow Allison and leave the Silo. Before he goes, he names Juliette as his successor and leaves her his Sheriff’s badge. He then announces his wish to go outside and locks himself in the holding cell.
When the time comes, he apologizes to the Mayor for causing trouble and steps out. Like Allison, he sees a green and vibrant world. Believing that Allison was right, he cleans the sensor so others can see the same view. However, the air is toxic, and his suit is made with faulty tape that lets the poison in.
Holston collapses and, in his final moments, takes off his helmet and crawls to Allison’s body before dying. Later, it is revealed that the green world Holston and Allison saw was not real. It was a fake image shown through their helmets.
The real world outside the Silo is dead and is a barren wasteland with toxic air. The fake view is used to trick people into cleaning the sensor before they die. Even though Holston dies, his actions do not go wasted. His investigation and story inspires Juliette to continue uncovering the Silo’s secrets.
Silo season 2 airs new episodes on Apple TV+ on Fridays.
