Shogun has added another trophy to its long list of accolades. The FX historical drama has won the Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Series. Based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel, the show follows Japanese lord Yoshii Toranaga, whose life is in danger as his political rivals rally against him.

When an English sailor is stuck in the country after a shipwreck, it changes the course of history. The show was initially billed as a limited series with only one season; however, following widespread acclaim and record-breaking Emmy Award nods, FX decided to move forward with two more seasons.

Shogun season 2 is currently in development. After the show’s Golden Globes win, the series creators shared an update about its future, revealing they are still working on the second season’s script.

Series creators reveal the writers’ room for Shogun season 2 is going on

Shogun creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks discussed the second season at the Golden Globes after the series swept multiple trophies on the night. The husband and wife duo revealed that work on the script is still ongoing. Kondo said:

“Well, it’s ongoing. We’re still trying. We haven’t given up. And I’m not sure what we can say.”

Marks then dislocated that the writer’s room will conclude in six weeks:

“We’re about six weeks from the end of the writers' room.”

Shogun season 2 was confirmed to be in development in May 2024, a month after the first season’s conclusion. Though FX originally intended it to be a limited series, the historical drama became the most-watched show ever on the network, which led to its renewal for two more seasons.

As the second season is still in the early stages of development, its release date has not been confirmed.

What will Shogun season 2 be about?

The show is based on James Clavell’s novel, entirely adapted into the first season. Hence, for season 2, the creators would have to come up with a new story and might adapt another aspect of Japanese history.

The show might delve into Toranaga becoming the leader of Japan with his strategic moves and uniting the country. With Edo as his power center, the political scenario might change again.

At the same time, Blackthorne may help Toranaga in his endeavor while being in the dilemma of staying in Japan or returning to England. Coming to the theme and setting of the show, Justin Marks revealed the second season will have a darker tone than the first one. He said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

“There’s a lot of great conspiracy theory in history. A lot of different theories about, ‘Oh, it was said that this went on, but this really went on,’ and those little darker corners are what we’ve really enjoyed exploring. Part two is, as second chapters go, kind of a darker chapter.”

Who will star in Shogun season 2?

Actor Hiroyuki Sanada is confirmed to be returning to the show as the lead, Yoshii Toranaga. However, the rest of the cast remains to be announced. Cosmo Jarvis has not yet confirmed whether he would reprise his role as the sailor John Blackthorne, but the show would be incomplete without him.

However, Anna Sawai would probably not return as Toda Mariko, as her character died in the first season. The same goes for Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige and Takehiro Hira as Ishido Kazunari, who might not return as their characters’ journeys reached their conclusion in season 1.

In an interview with Variety, Sanada revealed while half of the original cast members will be back in season 2, the other half will comprise new actors. Based on the fate of the characters in the first season, the following actors are expected to reprise their roles in Shogun season 2:

  • Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga
  • Cosmo Jarvis as John Blackthorne
  • Moeka Hoshi as Usami Fuji
  • Tommy Bastow as Father Martin Alvito
  • Shinnosuke Abe as Toda "Buntaro" Hirokatsu
  • Hiroto Kanai as Kashigi Omi
  • Yuka Kouri as Kiku
  • Fumi Nikaido as Ochiba no Kata

All episodes of Shogun season 1 are available to stream on Hulu.
