Is there going to be a season 3 of 1923? Details explored

With its premiere on December 18, 2022, 1923 marked another show in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe that,

"Explores the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, and the end of Prohibition all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home."

1923 follows the Dutton families but a different generation than the Yellowstone one. Captained by Harrison Ford and Helen Miren, who play Jacob and Cara Dutton respectively, 1923 shows the couple inheriting the Dutton ranch from Jacob’s brother James (Tim McGraw) and his wife Margaret (Faith Hill) after their demise. Jacob and Cara also bring home James and Margaret’s children John Dutton (James Badge Dale) and Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and look after them as their own sons.

With 1923 Season 2 concluding in April 2025, fans have been eagerly waiting regarding any update on season 3. However, as mentioned by Brandon Sklenar, who plays the role of Spencer Dutton, season 2 was the show’s last season.

1923 Season 3 has not been confirmed by Paramount+

While talking about possibilities of 1923 continuing beyond season 2, Sklenar, who plays the role of Spencer Dutton, mentioned to The Hollywood Reporter,

"No, no, it's bookend. [The series is] still limited, but I think of it as one piece—there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece. It will conclude."

Given the definitive nature of the statement, it does seem that the decision is final. Moreover, initially, 1923 was thought of as a miniseries but then it got a season 2. As Sklenar mentioned, the seasons can be seen as a single piece and thus the decision to end the show with the second season makes complete sense.

However, Paramount+ has not billed the season 2 finale as the series finale. Neither has the streamer announced the renewal of the show for a third season. From the story's point of view, the second installment's finale concluded the plot of the earlier generation of the Duttons.

Hence, 1923 Season 3 does not seem on the cards for now. That being said, another Yellowstone spin-off, 1944, is currently in development. Considering that Spender Dutton was alive during that time, he could make an appearance in the upcoming prequel series.

Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren returned as the Duttons in 1923 Season 2

Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren were confirmed to return in the second season as Sheridan had told The Hollywood Reporter on December 2022,

"They were excited. They only signed on originally for one season. They were so eager to continue it."

In his February 2023 interview with THR, Ford also confirmed what Sheridan had told earlier, saying,

"[Shrinking] came along, and then, very quickly after that, 1923 came along. I took the job without a script on both of them, on faith that the people who created the projects were going to deliver me a good script. I really didn’t realize how much work 1923 was going to be, and I absolutely feel it’s worth it. I’m excited to do another season of both."

Helen Mirren also gave off the vibe of a similar kind of excitement, as the actor told Deadline that she was very excited about the second season happening and added,

"I’m fascinated to see where Cara is going to go. Taylor did say she is very much of her era, she’s looking after the house. That is what her job is. But then he said, 'Wait, things are going to happen.' So we’ll see."
