Even before the debut season of Creature Commandos came to an end, the Max show renewed for a second season. Creature Commandos comprises the first building block of the new and renovated DC cinematic universe.

Creature Commandos belongs to the first phase of the new DC universe arc titled Gods and Monsters, with the adult animated show being an iteration of Monsters and the upcoming theatrical Superman being the iteration of Gods.

The creator of Creature Commandos and the co-chairman of DC, James Gunn, recently released a statement where he confirmed that the show will return for a second season on Max. Alongside co-chairman Peter Safran, Gunn added:

"We’re thrilled to team up with Max for another season of Creature Commandos mayhem. From our spectacular first season of Peacemaker to the astonishing run of The Penguin to the record-breaking launch of Creature Commandos, Max has consistently delivered above industry expectations and beyond our wildest imaginings. Thank you, Casey, Sarah, Pia, Sono and the entire team for your tremendous support of DC Studios. We are proud to call Max home.”

Here's everything that we know about the upcoming season.

Showrunners confirmed the renewal of Creature Commandos for a second season

Creature Commandos co-creator and DC co-chairman James Gunn recently took to his X (formerly known as Twitter) handle to drop the happy news of the animated series' renewal. The post read:

"You wanted monsters? Well, you’re getting even more. We’re coming back for season two! But don’t worry, we’ve still got plenty left this season for you. Catch new episodes of #CreatureCommandos every Thursday, with the season one finale dropping January 9 exclusively on."

During the later press statement release which expanded upon the initial announcement, Amy Gravitt, the Vice President of HBO and Max comedy programming commented:

"Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them. We couldn’t be more delighted to continue their stories with James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran and our fantastic partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.”

Similarly, Peter Girardi, the Executive Vice President of alternative programming at Warner Bros. Animation, reiterated their faith in Gunn and HBO as the streaming platform partner. Girardi mentioned:

"Thanks to the brilliant imagination of James and the talent of our amazing artists, DC fans fell in love with this new family of heroes. We are excited to continue this wild ride with our partners at Max. You want more monsters, you’re getting more monsters.”

Why doesn't Creature Commandos release all episodes at once?

Following the advent of digital streaming and the streaming platform giant Netflix, audiences globally have accustomed themselves to binge-watching. This is particularly relevant in the case of such shows, which usually opt to release all of their episodes at once. However, contrary to this, DC co-chairman James Gunn has always stuck to the practice of releasing one episode per week over a given time.

Gunn wrote all of the episodes for the debut season of Creature Commandos and took an active part in the production despite shouldering significant responsibilities as the co-chairman of DC. He recently responded to a fan inquiry, answering the question about why he doesn't drop all the episodes at once. His answer revealed that he preferred the evolution of discussion that a weekly release pattern offers. He added:

"Because it affords a quality show an opportunity to be discussed and grow from week to week. CC has gotten more popular from episode to episode because of the positive discussion around it and has cultivated an enthusiastic audience. If we had dropped all the episodes at once who knows what would have happened. I will likely always be in the one-a-week camp for our shows. For people who want to binge all at once they can wait until the end of the season.
