Created by Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon, Mayor of Kingstown premiered in 2021 and has been a hit with the audience ever since.

Starring Jeremy Renner as Mike McLusky, Mayor of Kingstown is a crime drama that focuses on the McLusky family in Kingstown where incarceration is the only industry that thrives.

The town has neither justice nor order and the show, with its theme of racism, inequality, and corruption, follows McLusky and how he tries to keep peace between the criminals and law enforcers in the town, both outside and inside the prison system of the city.

One of the key characters of the show is Iris, played by Emma Laird. Iris was introduced in the show as a tool to seduce Mike. However, she ended up forming a genuine connection with him.

The season 3 finale brought a rather surprising and unfortunate end to Iris’ character. Let us now explore in detail what happened to Emma Laird’s Iris in Mayor of Kingstown and if she will be back in case there is a season 4.

The following sections contain spoilers.

What happens to Iris at the end of Mayor of Kingstown Season 3?

While the Season 3 finale of Mayor of Kingstown sees a bloodbath, one of the storylines also focuses majorly on Iris and brings an end to the character on the show.

Milo returns in season 3, episode 9, after faking his own death, and confronts Konstantin, announcing that Iris had been working as Milo’s spy all this time.

As a yacht face-off ensues between Mike, Milo, and Konstantin, Iris shoots Konstantin in the head and kills him. Milo is then killed by Mike after the former insinuates that Mike’s mother, Mariam, passed away because of him.

Mike orders Ian to get Iris on a bus and take her out of town. This probably makes Iris feel distanced from her closest ally even though Mike only wants to ensure her safety.

However, traumatized by what just happened, Iris does take the bus. Unfortunately, she takes two pills on the bus, and at the next bus station, the driver finds her dead with her face pale.

Will Iris return in Mayor of Kingstown Season 4?

There is no official confirmation on Mayor of Kingstown Season 4. However, even if a fourth season materializes, Iris’ character will not be seen in it.

Co-creator Hugh Dillon spoke to Variety regarding the character’s death:

“no one is safe and nothing is sacred.”

He continued:

"You should say goodbye. Taylor taught me this, and this is how we operate. This is about life. The opium epidemic. I grew up in a prison town, and no one is safe and nothing is sacred. And if you grasp that, it can be a grief-driven experience, but you have to put those real-life markers in, or else it’s just a show. Those are real things that people deal with. I’m from a prison town, so I’ve been dealing with these things for years."

Dillon also mentioned that it is best to completely let go of the characters who have been killed on screen because he believes that pretending that those deaths did not occur and bridging the characters back would not serve the show well:

"would be a disservice to all of us."

While Iris’ death did shock the fans, it was necessary for her character arc. She had gone through hell during her time in Kingstown and yet having to leave the town was devastating for her. Therefore, writing off her character in the manner that the show did, gave her a fitting and respectful end.

Mayor of Kingstown can be streamed on Paramount+.
