Based on the famous video game by Naughty Dog, HBO's The Last of Us was renewed for Season 2, which will finally premiere in April 2025.
Starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the titular roles, the show follows a post-apocalyptic world that has been wiped out by a mass fungal infection that has transformed the majority of the population into zombies.
Among them, Ellie, a teenager, is prone to the virus and might be humanity's last surviving grace. Actress Bella confirmed that Season 2 would see a five-year time jump after the events of Season 1, and fans were wondering whether Ellie would be recast in The Last of Us sophomore season.
Putting an end to all the rumors, the show's creators have revealed that Ellie will not be recast, and Bella will reprise her role in Season 2. Moreover, Bella is now 19 years old, which is close to Ellie's age in the game's sequel.
More on the creator's decision not to recast Ellie in The Last of Us Season 2 in our story.
The Last Of Us creators confirmed Bella will reprise her role as Ellie in Season 2
If Pascal's Joel is tasked with one of the most crucial tasks anybody can have in a post-apocalyptic world, Bella's Ellie is riddled with the burden of being humanity's savior in The Last Of Us.
As seen in Season 1, Ellie is immune to the Cordyceps infection and could be used in creating the vaccine, which would work as an antidote for the virus and save humanity.
As confirmed by Bella on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Season 2 would also take a five-year time jump, like the sequel game, where Ellie would be all grown up.
Debunking all the Ellie recast rumors because of the actress' age, creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann revealed in an interview with ScreenRant that Bela would not be recast as Ellie and will continue to play the character in Season 2:
''we got lightning in the bottle again with Bella. We are extremely lucky to have Bella in the stuff you saw throughout this entire season. The only way we would ever ever consider recasting Bella is if she said, "I don't want to work with you guys anymore." Even then, we're not sure we would grant her that, we might still force her to come back.''
The creators discussed that while the show is inspired by the game, they do not want it to shadow it forever and want it to be its own thing. So, naturally, the makers have taken on this casting decision for the show because they feel that Bella has understood the soul of Ellie throughout Season 1, which they want again in Season 2:
''But it's going to be different, and it will be its own thing. It won't be exactly like the game, it will be the show that Neil and I want to make. We are making it with Bella...we know what we're going to do in terms of costume and makeup and hair, but more importantly, we also know the spirit and soul of the actor.''
