Dr. Dean Archer has been an integral part of Chicago Med since his introduction to the medical drama in the sixth season. Played by Steven Weber, the trauma surgeon is known for his tough personality and his expertise in dealing with patients.
However, ever since Chicago Med season 10 premiered, there have been speculations about Dr. Archer leaving the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, and hence, Steven Weber exiting the show.
The speculations seemed to come true in the season 10 fall finale when the doctor resigned from the hospital after being demoted. However, Chicago Med season 10 episode 9 has confirmed that Dr. Archer is not leaving the show as he has decided to stay at the hospital after an emotional encounter with Sharon Goodwin.
Dr. Archer is not leaving Chicago Med
Dr. Archer resigned from his position at the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center in season 10, episode 8, after his constant feud with fellow doctor Caitlin Lenox, which led to his demotion. This left his future in the hospital, and in the show, uncertain.
However, the doctor has a change of heart in season 10, episode 9, 'No Love Lost.' In the episode, Sharon Goodwin fights for her life after being stabbed by Cassidy, the wife of a former patient, who died earlier in the season.
During the tussle between Goodwin and Cassidy, Dr. Archer reaches the administrator’s office and helps her escape, eventually taking her to the Emergency Department.
He then performs a complicated surgery on her and even breaks the code of conduct by not asking for her daughter’s permission before going ahead with a risky procedure to save her life.
He is eventually able to save Goodwin. As she undergoes recovery in the ICU, she has a heartfelt conversation with Dr. Archer. She tears apart the resignation letter he had earlier offered her and tells him that not only the hospital but also she needs him.
The doctor then changes his decision and chooses to keep working at the hospital. In an interview with NBC Insider, Steven Weber talked about what made his character stay at the medical center. He said:
“He's ready to give it all up and move on into areas unknown, but fate has intervened and his military instincts kick in. But at the same time, he is absolutely feeling an emotional connection to Ms.Goodwin in ways that I don't think he really marked before.”
Weber further confirmed that he is not going anywhere, and will continue being a part of the show. Instead, his character will be seen in a new light in future episodes, which shows emotional growth:
“He's still being told or being led to be a healer, to be a helper. This might be the beginning of some other trajectory that he could not have predicted for himself, nor could the audience have predicted.”
Why did Dr. Archer resign from the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center?
In Chicago Med season 10, episode 8, 'Love Will Tear Us Apart,' Dr. Archer goes to Goodwin’s office to offer his resignation. He does so due to his frequent clashes with Dr. Caitlin Lenox, a new co-chief introduced in season 10.
Their disagreements lead to Goodwin naming Lenox as the sole ED chief and demoting Archer to a regular attending doctor. At first, Archer seems to handle the change well and even tells Lenox that he supports her leadership.
However, he struggles inside and tells Dr. Hannah Asher that the demotion, along with personal issues like his son, Sean, moving away, and his breakup with his girlfriend Margo, makes him feel like he had no reason to stay.
Hannah tries to convince Archer to reconsider, but he decides to submit his resignation letter to Goodwin. However, he reverses his decision in the next episode and chooses to stick to his job.
The new episodes of Chicago Med season 10 are aired on NBC on Wednesdays.
