The 2021 Cumbre Vieja Eruption and Its Aftermath
This eruption was record-breaking in terms of duration and impact. The lava flows ruined over 1,000 hectares of land, with more than 1,345 homes and 16 schools destroyed. Around 7,000 residents had to be evacuated as a result. Economic losses estimated at around $950 million were recorded.
Immediately, La Palma was in a tough spot. Infrastructure and homes were destroyed, requiring reconstruction on a large scale. The island's economy, which is primarily based on agriculture and tourism, was also affected. However, there was some hope in the burnt embers. The new volcanic landscapes that emerged from the eruption started to attract attention worldwide, paving the way for tourism to bounce back.
Tourism Rebound and Sustainable Strategies
Despite the initial decline, tourism in La Palma is bouncing back. The unique black sand beaches and the volcanic scenery have attracted this new generation of travelers interested in different and less crowded places. The rise has been impetus by improved air connectivity, with flight connections to Düsseldorf, and plans to increase services to and from the UK, Czech Republic, and Poland by 2025.
In response to increasing popularity, local authorities implemented sustainable tourism strategies that could better preserve the island's natural beauty while offering it to visitors. It mainly focuses on providing "experiences without overcrowding" so that tourism development must align with conservation and the well-being of communities.
Cumbre Vieja's eruption at the end of the world in 2021 subsequently opened a new era for La Palma with both destruction and opportunity. It plans to harness the island's unique geological features to develop its tourism into something more attractive and sustainable with truly unique landscapes.
Today, La Palma testifies to resilience and the capacity for renewal after natural disasters as it continues to build and innovate.
