Now that Creature Commandos Season 1 has concluded its run, we wonder what's in store for the DC Universe or DCU next. While most of us ponder theories about how Creature Commandos will lead to Superman, some also ask, "Is Creature Commandos a DCEU reboot?" That's because the Max animated series primarily tells its own story with very few nods to the old DCEU.

James Gunn in an interview confirmed that while the DCU is a complete reboot, some elements and characters from the now-defunct DCEU will be used in DCU too. When asked about the DCU canon which began with Creature Commandos, Gunn said:

“One of the weird things to me is none of this is real. It may be alarming to people, but none of it is real. It's all just stories that we're telling about characters.”

On the surface, the DCU canon seems as complicated as the Fox X-Men movies. For example, we see Viola Davis's Amanda Waller for the first time in David Ayer's Suicide Squad. She came back as Waller in The Suicide Squad, which was directed by James Gunn and Peacemaker Season 1. In fact, Creature Commandos is set after Peacemaker Season 1.

The Suicide Squad and Creature Commandos were thought to be a part of the DCEU, they were retconned to be a part of the DCU. So this means that characters like Amanda Waller, John Economos, Leota Adebayo, and Emilia Harcourt are canon to the DCU. Even important plot points like the death of Rick Flag Jr. are canon to the DCU too. There is one exception though.

The Justice League appearance in Peacemaker Season 1 might be retconned

Peacemaker Season 1 finale "It's Cow or Never" has Christopher Smith and his team meet the Justice League (the version seen in Zack Snyder's Justice League). When asked about this particular scene Gunn clarified the confusion this way:

“The truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of Justice League … which we will kind of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker.”

What do James Gunn's comments mean for the DCU canon?

Until the appearance of the Justice League, Peacemaker Season 1 feels very standalone, meaning it can fit right into the DCU canon consisting of Creature Commandos. The same applies to the James Gunn-directed The Suicide Squad too. Peacemaker killing Rick Flag Jr. happened in this continuity too, but the details of that confrontation may be different from The Suicide Squad.

Also, while Economos, Waller, and King Shark are seen in Creature Commandos, they probably aren't the same versions seen previously.

DCU Canon explained

To clear the canon confusion, here is the table that clarifies the canonical status of each of the Gunn-directed DC movies:

So the answer to the question "Is Creature Commandos a DCEU reboot?" is technically yes. Creature Commandos is the start of the new continuity, which is simply titled the "DCU". After the animated series, two other DCU projects are releasing this year. They are Superman and Peacemaker Season 2.
